(Newser) - Billboard has produced its definitive list of the top 100 songs of the past 50 years—and it's full of surprises. One is that neither Elvis nor the Beatles made the top five. They were beaten out by Santana, Bobby Darin, and even Los Del Rio's Macarena . Another twist—Chubby Checker's The Twist is the all-time No. 1 hit song. The top 10 are: More »

      You Are Your Music: Study

(Newser) - Our favorite music speaks volumes about who we are, according to a new psychological study. It turns out that Indie fans are miserable, and metal heads act a lot like classical music lovers. The Independent breaks down personalities by genre:   Indie: Low self-esteem and lazy, not to mention selfish and unkind. Rock: Hard-working and creative, but also unfriendly and hardly generous. Athletes Got Nothin' on Rock 'n Roll Drummers

(Newser) - Sure, the lead singer gets all the attention, but how about a little respect for the drummer? Sports scientists are taking up the cause with a new study that says the rockers are as fit as Olympic athletes, the Times of London reports. The best of them lose 2 quarts of water a night, burn about 500 calories an hour, and have a heart rate that rivals a top soccer player. "You get a three-hour workout every night," says the Blur's Dave Rowntree. More »

'Rock Band' Reinvents the Cover Band

(Newser) - The hugely popular "Rock Band" is more than just a video game—it's a musical revolution, Brett McCallon writes in More Intelligent Life. The game, which expands "Guitar Hero" to two axes, a drum kit and a singer, finally realizes “the democratizing dreams of the punk movement.” McCallon should know, because his "Rock Band" band plays live—and has amateur musicians grousing. How an Amateur Made Classical Cool in NYC

(Newser) - Ronen Givony is no musician, he can’t read music, and had never organized a concert—until recently. Now the 28-year-old is considered one of New York’s top impresarios, thanks to his “Wordless Music” series, which puts top indie rock and electronica bands on the same bill as classical performers. The series is a blockbuster, drawing the young, curious 20-something crowd that Lincoln Center so desires. More »
