      (Newser) - The inventor of the Egg McMuffin has died in his Southern California home at the age of 89,  AP reports. Herb Peterson began working with McDonald's in the advertising department, and later switched to the hands-on side of the business, owning six restaurants in the Santa Barbara area. Peterson, a big fan of eggs Benedict, came up with the idea for the breakfast-on-the-run Egg McMuffin in 1972, inspiring a host of imitators. More »

      (Newser) - The founder and returning head of Starbucks has announced plans to turn the flagging operation around by taking it back to its intimate coffee-house roots, reports the Seattle Post-Intelligencer . CEO Howard Schultz is ditching the chain's profitable morning sandwich line after listening to advice from baristas who complained that the smell of the food was overpowering the aroma of coffee and detracting from the Starbucks "experience."       Starbucks Reports First Dip in Customers

      (Newser) - Starbucks reported its first-ever decline in US customer visits today, reports Bloomberg. The coffee juggernaut lowered its profit and sales forecast, and shares of its stock fell 8.3%. The profit revision suggests that Starbucks is losing customers to McDonald's and Dunkin' Donuts, where a cup of coffee may cost $1 or less.  More »
