Kremlin Foe Denied Bid for Parole

(AP) - A Russian court has rejected Mikhail Khodorkovsky's request for parole on Friday, ordering the jailed oil tycoon to serve out the remainder of his sentence in a ruling his lawyer called politically motivated. Khodorkovsky, the former head of Yukos oil company and once Russia's richest man, was sentenced to 8 years in a Siberian prison in 2005 for tax evasion and fraud in what Kremlin critics slammed as a flawed trial. Eclipse Draws 15K to Siberia

(Newser) - Prospects of rare total solar eclipse have drawn thousands of sky-watchers to the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, where the moon’s passage between the earth and sun will create 140 seconds of darkness at 5:45 pm local time today. Hotels in the city—Russia’s third-largest—are fully booked, reports the Guardian. US viewers, meanwhile, won't be able to see a full eclipse, but residents of the Northeast may see a partial one at sunrise today. More »

Scientists ID Catastrophic Climate Change 'Tipping Zones'

(Newser) - Scientists have identified nine danger zones where global warming could be pushed past the point of no return within years, the Independent reports. The scenarios include the melting of ice in the Arctic and Antarctic, the collapse of the Indian and West African monsoons, and the death of forests in Canada, Siberia and the Amazon. Once climate "tipping points" are reached in any of the zones, the change would likely be irreversible—and could all occur within this century, the experts warned. More »

(Newser) - A big asteroid has a decent chance of blasting into Mars next month with potentially devastating consequences for the Red Planet, the LA Times reports. Global Warming: Who Wins?

(Newser) - Global warming is a looming planetary disaster, but there will be winners along with the losers, writes Brookings Institute Fellow Gregg Easterbrook. While arable regions turn into arid wasteland and coastal communities sink beneath rising oceans, climate change could trigger a real estate and mineral resources boom in balmier Alaska, Canada, Scandinavia, Russia and newly-thawed Greenland, three times the size of Texas.
