      Lopez Lands Extra Anchor Slot

      (Newser) - Mario Lopez will become the solo anchor for Extra when the entertainment news show’s 15th season kicks off in September, Variety reports. The former weekend co-host, best known for his stints on Dancing With the Stars and the teen sitcom Saved By the Bell , replaces Dayna Devon and Mark McGrath, the Sugar Ray frontman who’s returning to his music.       Hume to Leave Fox Anchor Role

      (Newser) - Fox News' Brit Hume plans to step down from his role as anchor of the daily Special Report and as Washington managing editor at the end of the year, the Washington Post reports. Hume is near a deal to stay on Fox part-time as a senior political analyst, sources say, much like Tom Brokaw's role with NBC. The former ABC White House correspondent has been a highly visible Fox presence since the channel launched 12 years ago. More »

      2 Internet Cables Repaired

      (Newser) - Repairs are complete on two undersea Internet cables in the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf that were cut last month, reports the AP. UK-based Fiber-optic Link Around the Glob (FLAG) said the Persian Gulf cable was cut by an abandoned anchor, but the other cable cut remained unexplained. The damage caused massive internet blackouts and delays throughout the Mideast and parts of Asia. More »

      Anchor Cut Persian Gulf Internet Cable

      (Newser) - The severed Internet cable in the Persian Gulf was the work of a 5.5-ton ship’s anchor, the AP reports. A crew from the FLAG telecommunications company, which owns the cable, found the anchor near Dubai and hauled it up; how the cut occurred is still unexplained. The incident spawned Internet-usage problems through the Middle East and areas of Asia. More »
