      140 Killed in India Temple Stampede

      (Newser) - At least 140 people, including at least 40 children, were killed today in a stampede when a restraining rail gave way at a Hindu temple in northern India, the BBC reports. The pilgrims were attending a 9-day religious festival. Authorities used a cable car to remove the injured from the mountaintop Naina Devi temple, located about 100 miles from the Himalyan town of Shimia. It's the third deadly stampede to occur during a religious festival this year in India, though death tolls were a fraction of today's grim tally. More »

      Cops on Hook for Fatal Mexico Stampede

      (Newser) - Mexico City has suspended the cops who triggered a nightclub stampede that left twelve dead on Friday, CNN reports. Responding to reports of alcohol and drugs sold to minors, the police sparked a riot when the raid was announced. Police made "serious errors" in the operation, Mexico City's mayor said, but club owners "acted with evident irresponsibility and outside the law." More »

      (Newser) - At least ten people were killed yesterday when they were crushed in a stampede of fans at a punk rock concert in Indonesia. The victims, mostly teenagers, died as a mob of concertgoers tried to leave the jam-packed venue as others were still streaming in, and the crowd panicked, according to some reports. Other witnesses said drunk fans triggered the panic as they stormed through the crowd. More »
