Clemens Musters Stats to Counter Steroids Charges

(Newser) - Roger Clemens was not in the “twilight” of his career or "washed up" in the late '90s, a statistical report released by his agents today aims to show, to refute allegations that the hurler used performance-enhancing drugs to rebound. Bonds Wants Perjury Charges Dismissed

(Newser) - Barry Bonds' attorneys have filed a motion in federal court to have the perjury charges against him dismissed. The charges stem from Bonds allegedly lying to a grand jury about his use of performance-enhancing drugs in December 2003. Bonds claims that the indictment was “scattershot” and that questions poised to him by prosecutors were ambiguous and confusing, the AP reports. More »

(Newser) - It has been nearly three years since MLB commissioner Bud Selig was taken to task by members of Congress for allowing steroids to permeate the nation’s pastime. Clemens Sues for Defamation

(Newser) - Roger Clemens filed a defamation lawsuit against former trainer Brian McNamee last night, just before his "60 Minutes" interview aired, the Houston Chronicle reports. McNamee falsely claimed he had injected Clemens with steroids, the lawsuit alleges, when federal agents threatened him with jail time. McNamee’s lawyers say that’s nonsense, since the trainer could only have landed in jail by lying. More »

Bonds to Make First Court Appearance

(Newser) - Barry Bonds is set to appear in federal court today to face charges of perjury for allegedly lying under oath about knowingly taking steroids. Because the brief hearing at the Federal Building in San Francisco will be Bonds' first public appearance following his indictment, it's expected to draw hundreds of journalists. To minimize disruption, two judges will be brought to Bonds, rather than having the slugger appear in two different courtrooms. More »

Need an Edge? Try Performance Enhancing Placebos

(Newser) - If there’s nothing actually illegal in your steroid injection, is it still cheating? Placebos, long one of medicine’s top tools, can act as performance enhancing drugs, a new study has proven. The study pitted athletic young men against each other in a pain-endurance contest. Those given a morphine placebo won handily. Of course, the athletes have to believe they’re actually cheating. More »

      Legalize Steroids, Save Sports

(Newser) - Nearly everyone has used drugs to improve performance in some aspect of life—caffeine to work late, sleeping pills to guarantee rest, medicine to clear up a cold—so it is nonsensical to prevent athletes from doing the same, argues Sally Jenkins of the Washington Post . Her answer to the burgeoning steroid scandals in sports is to legalize the substances and leave it up to athletes to police themselves. More »
