      (Newser) - An American Airlines jet made an emergency landing in Los Angeles today because of a blown tire, the LA Times reports. Flight 1586, carrying 135 people bound for Toronto, circled Los Angeles International Airport for 45 minutes to burn fuel, “diminishing the possibility of having some sort of fire when it lands,” a spokesman explained. “Taking out some of the danger.” More »

      (Newser) - Two drunk British women attacked the flight crew on their charter jet en route from Greece to England, causing the pilot to make an emergency landing in Germany, AP reports. After being denied alcohol, one of the women swung a vodka bottle and tried to open the cabin door. The women may be charged with attempted assault and interfering with air traffic. More »

      (AP) - A Qantas flight en route to Australia from London made an emergency landing in Manila today after a mysterious bang punched a 9-foot-wide hole in the fuselage and sent the Boeing 747-400 plunging thousands of feet. There were no injuries but some of the 350 passengers and crew vomited, AP reports. Part of the cabin's ceiling also collapsed and the floor gave way, exposing cargo beneath.  More »

      More Trouble With American's MD-80 Fleet: Landing Gear

      (Newser) - In one of 23 such instances recently, an American Airlines pilot told CNN that troubles with the landing gear in his Boeing MD-80 forced him to return to Minneapolis moments after takeoff in December. Problems with the gear knocked out the anti-icing system in the plane, which is at the center of wiring issues that have forced American to cancel more than 1,000 flights the past two days. More »

      (Newser) - Helicopters transporting three US senators over mountains in Afghanistan were forced to make an emergency landing today due to a snowstorm, the Associated Press reports. US troops sent ground transportation for Democrats John Kerry and Joseph Biden and Republican Chuck Hagel, none of whom was injured, and returned them to Bagram Air Base. Their diplomatic tour has since continued to Ankara, Turkey. More »
