Hsu Sent Suicide Note Before Skipping Town

Dem fundraiser was found disoriented, locked in train cabin

(Newser) - Fugitive fundraiser Norman Hsu sent out a suicide note to acquaintances and charities he had supported before he hopped a train to Colorado last week, skipping out on a Bay Area court appearance. On the train, Hsu locked himself in a tiny cabin. When he  failed to come out the next day, Amtrak workers used a crowbar to pry open the door, the Wall Street Journal reports. They found a bare-chested, disoriented Hsu on the floor, surrounded by prescription pills. More »

(Newser) - An archbishop and prominent critic of Robert Mugabe's regime has resigned his Catholic Church leadership position after being accused of having an affair with a married woman. Pius Ncube remains a bishop, and his supporters say they see the authoritarian Zimbabwean regime behind the scandal, which Ncube calls "a state-driven, vicious attack," the LA Times reports. More »

Strategy could delay resignation and stave off ethics probe

(Newser) - Toe-tapping Senator Larry Craig will file a motion today to retract his guilty plea to charges linked to allegedly soliciting sex in a public men's room. Minnesota law allows convicts to recant pleas if they can prove they were not intelligently made, but such strategies rarely succeed. The legal proceedings could delay Craig's scheduled Sept. 30 retirement and stave off an investigation by the Senate ethics committee. More »
