Wal-Mart Scraps Online Movie Service

Move comes as HP nixes software that supported the site

(Newser) - Wal-Mart shuttered its 10-month-old video download service without fanfare last week, ending a disappointing experiment for the bargain retailer, Reuters reports. Fox deal presages plans to shake up online distribution

Amazon Gets Funky With Warner Music

DRM-free iTunes competitor continues to attract big labels

(Newser) - Amazon’s burgeoning mp3 service landed another big fish today, adding Warner Music’s catalog to its online store. The Amazon shop aims to compete with Apple’s iTunes, selling songs for 89 cents as opposed to Apple’s 99 cents and without digital rights management software that makes sharing songs difficult and limits which players will play them. Apple Seals Online DVD Rental Deal With Fox

New releases to be offered on iTunes

(Newser) - In a groundbreaking deal 20th Century Fox will offer its new DVD releases as downloadable rentals on Apple's iTunes Store, the Financial Times reports. New Fox DVD releases will also come with special iTunes-compatible versions of the film that can be easily ripped from the disc. Apple Shares Smash $200 Barrier

(Newser) - Apple's shares hit a record high today, climbing $1.80 to $200.60 before retreating to close at $198.95. Strong sales of the Macintosh computer, iPod, and iPhone fueled the rally, reports Bloomberg, and Apple says sales this holiday season will be the highest in its 31-year history. (Newser) - The NPD market research group says that the lates version of the operating system, Leopard, is Apple's most successful yet, reports Apple Insider. In its first month on the shelves, sales were 20% higher than last year's Tiger release, despite promotion being stepped down a little.
