Higher liquor taxes may reduce deaths related to alcohol consumption, the Chicago Tribune reports. A new study examined Alaska’s alcohol tax rates over a 30-year period in conjunction with deaths from alcohol-related diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver. When taxes were raised, such deaths decreased by as much as 29%.

California officials are investigating three deaths and a rape at a Pasadena hospital that's home to a rehab facility run by physician-to-the-stars "Dr. Drew" Pinsky. The deaths occurred at Aurora Las Encinas Hospital, where Pinsky is co-director of the chemical dependency program. Two of the patients died of drug overdoses in the substance abuse facility, the Los Angeles Times has reported.

The family of a New York woman who died in a holding cell at a Phoenix airport is suing the police department and city for $8 million, CNN reports. Carol Gotbaum became agitated after missing a flight last September and cops put her alone in a cell where she accidentally strangled herself as she tried to escape her handcuffs. Gotbaum, the stepdaughter-in-law of a New York City official, had been traveling alone to Tucson to enter an alcohol rehabilitation center.
