(Newser) - An email from a stranger brought an entirely unexpected end to Alaina Emery’s 13-year hunt for her father. “Is your father’s name Robert Emery?” the emailer asked. “The whole city of Houston is looking for any relatives.” Emery, Alaina soon learned, was being hailed as a hero, having died while dashing across a freeway trying to save three dogs during Hurricane Ike, reports the Houston Chronicle. (Newser) - Survivors of a capsized college yacht yesterday hailed the boat's safety officer as a hero who gave his life to save theirs, CNN reports. Roger Stone died after pushing two of his Texas A&M University crewmates to safety from below decks last week as the craft rapidly took on water. The five who made it out of the boat spent 26 hours in the Gulf of Mexico before being rescued. More »

(Newser) - A Texas teenager has become the second woman since World War II to be awarded the Silver Star for bravery in combat. Texas medic Monica Lin Brown, 19, used her body to shield five wounded comrades from gunfire while she treated them after their convoy was caught by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan, reports the Houston Chronicle . (Newser) - The first full-blooded Sioux to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor was awarded his medal 26 years after his death at a moving ceremony at the White House yesterday, reports CNN. President Bush presented the medal to family members of Army Master Sgt. Woodrow "Woody" Keeble, whose courage in World War II and Korea already earned him two Purple Hearts and a Silver and Bronze Star. More »
