The conservative movement is at a crossroads, torn between its intellectuals (think David Brooks) and its shouters (think Rush Limbaugh). As TV’s main conservative voice, Fox News could tip the scales, so Isaac Chotiner of the New Republic watched as much of the channel as he could. His verdict isn’t kind. “Once the network of optimistic, flag-waving jingoism,” he writes, “Fox has become a beacon of sky-is-falling fury.”

Sarah Palin apparently believes the San Francisco Chronicle suppressed a January interview with Barack Obama, in which he threatens to bankrupt the coal industry. “You gotta listen to the tape,” Palin told an Ohio crowd yesterday. “Why is this audio tape just now surfacing? This interview was given many months ago.” To the crowd, the answer was obvious—“Liberal media!” someone shouted—but the Chronicle says it posted the interview in full online in January.

Tough competition drives Fleet Street-style sensationalism, bias

Financial Times (UK) Oct 30, 08 9:38 AM CDT
(Newser)
-
The Ashley Todd hoax was as good a symbol as any of the decline of the Drudge Report, writes John Gapper in the Financial Times . Liberal blogs, cable TV, and, indeed, newspapers themselves have invaded and occupied Matt Drudge’s sensationalist niche. Tough competition and falling circulation are “pushing newspapers back to a scrappier, more plain-spoken and partisan ‘yellow press’ past.”

Fuming campaign suggests paper find Obama's 'drug dealer'

Chicago Sun-Times Oct 18, 08 4:16 PM CDT
(Newser)
-
The McCain campaign and the New York Times are at it again after the paper published a partly unflattering profile of Cindy McCain today, Lynn Sweet reports for the Chicago Sun-Times . Mrs. McCain’s lawyer fired off an angry letter at the Times , asking why it drudged up old stories on Cindy's drug use and charitable life. "You have not tried to find Barack Obama's drug dealer that he wrote about in his book," he wrote. “There is a terrific lack of balance here."

Republican scaring away members of his own party turns press into hunters

New York Oct 6, 08 3:10 PM CDT
(Newser)
-
John McCain used to call the press “my base,” but if that’s true, his base has turned against him. Most of his biggest admirers, won over by his 2000 campaign, have become brutal critics, John Heileman writes for New York. The Republicans of all stripes pouring off the bandwagon, especially over the past month, "gave the press a permission slip to question McCain’s authenticity and integrity," Heileman contends.

Ifill's book on black politics has been reported for months

New York Times Oct 2, 08 9:40 AM CDT
(Newser)
-
When the two presidential campaigns agreed that Gwen Ifill would moderate tonight's VP debate, it was already known that she was writing a book on contemporary black politics. But yesterday the right wing blogosphere erupted with claims that Ifill is biased toward the Democrats and should pull out. As the New York Times reports, however, strategists on both sides think that bashing the moderator is a tactic to encourage Ifill to go easy on Sarah Palin, or to mitigate a possible bad performance.

-
The McCain camp launched another attack on the media yesterday, this time blasting the New York Times as "biased" for its report linking the campaign to lobbyists for Freddie Mac and Freddie Mae. A spokesman called the Times a "pro-Obama advocacy organization" after the paper revealed that campaign manager Rick Davis received $2 million when he was a lobbyist to shield the loan giants from tougher regulations, reports the Washington Post .

ABC News Sep 3, 08 12:00 PM CDT

Cindy McCain "absolutely" believes sexism is behind the media scrutiny of Sarah Palin, the beer heiress told ABC's Good Morning America , complaining that the Palin coverage is "insulting" and "outlandish." McCain, however, said she didn't remember Palin deriding Clinton's "whine about that excess criticism" as doing women no favors.

Ron Fournier’s objectivity is being questioned yet again, as Politico reports that the AP’s Washington bureau chief was offered a senior position in the McCain campaign before returning to the wire service in March 2007. Fournier’s political leanings have been a hot topic lately, since a 2004 email surfaced in which the reporter told Bush adviser Karl Rove to “keep up the fight.”

John McCain’s latest jab at Barack Obama—“It seems to me that Obama would rather lose a war in order to win a political campaign”–stuns Joe Klein, who writes in Time that the Republican’s Iraq claim is the most “scurrilous statement by a major party candidate” he’s heard in nine elections. “It smacks of desperation,” Klein says. “How sad.”

Yesterday, as his campaign released an ad mocking the press corps’ affection for Barack Obama—and handed out press credentials rubbing it in—John McCain said the opposite to CBS’ Katie Couric. Mac “doesn’t think” the media has been unfair: “I'm certainly not complaining. And, in fact, I think it’s fun to watch." Observes Rachel Weiner on the Huffington Post, “so much for message discipline.”
