(Newser) - For the first time since the 1970s, scientists in several countries are studying the effects of psychedelic drugs like LSD in clinical trials, the Guardian reports. Researchers believe the long-stigmatized drugs may improve patients’ quality of life, helping them cope with the ravages of illness, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and even cluster headaches. “I think there's a perception these compounds hold untapped potential to help us understand the human mind,” says one researcher. Subjects say illegal hallucinogen changed their lives

(Newser) - Volunteers who took hallucinogenic psilocybin mushrooms in a study say they have gained long-term benefits from the drug, reports the AP. Subjects of the study, one of very few involving hallucinogenic drugs since the '60s, say they still feel positive effects from their psychedelic experience years later. Many say it was one of the most spiritual experiences of their lives. Researchers believe the mushrooms, which are illegal but are used in religious ceremonies, could someday play a role in therapy. Moses Got High on Mt. Sinai, Study Says

Mind-altering drugs
may have sparked religious visions

(Newser) - Moses was high on mind-altering drugs when he heard God’s word on Mount Sinai, an Israeli researcher said this week. He contends that hallucinogenics were key to Jewish ceremonies and explain Moses' reception of the Ten Commandments and his vision of the burning bush. Benny Shanon, who teaches at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, admits he's dabbled in such drugs himself. More »
