Actor hasn't minced words in aftermath of Election Day polling snafu

(Newser) - The New York City Board of Elections, headed up by a man Tim Robbins has termed a "corrupt scumbag," is reaching out to the prickly actor with an offer he might well resist—turn his Election Day voting tantrum into a civics lesson. TMZ reports that the board is inviting the Bull Durham actor to produce a public-service announcement on voter participation. No comment from camp Robbins. More »

Treatment may be more harmful than helpful after the age of 74

(Newser) - Physicians should stop screening men 75 and older for prostate cancer, according to new guidelines issued by national health task force. Prostate cancer is "overdiagnosed" in up to 44% of cases—that is, the cancer is present but so slow growing that it would probably never produce symptoms in the patient's lifetime.But the treatment itself may be debilitating, causing impotence or incontinence,  the New York Times reports. Daily pill shrinks advanced tumors

(Newser) - A new experimental pill taken once a day is proving effective against an advanced, aggressive form of prostate cancer which has resisted other therapies, reports Reuters. The drug, abiraterone, created by Cougar Biotechnology, significantly shrank tumors in a clinical trial, according to a study in the Journal of Clinical Oncology . It could be available by 2011. Prostate cancer is the second-leading cancer killer of men after lung cancer. More »

Evasive maneuvers prevent mid-air crash after air-traffic trainee errs

(Newser) - A quick nosedive by a Delta pilot narrowly averted a mid-air collision of two passenger planes over Pittsburgh this morning, after an air traffic control trainee told a Delta pilot to turn into another jet’s path. The planes, carrying 120 passengers between them, missed each other by a scant 400 feet. The second pilot, flying for PSA, also took evasive action. More »
