Tibetan flags will be banned from all Olympic equestrian events in Hong Kong under rules aimed at heading off political protests inside competition venues, organizers said today. Ruling Doesn't Chop Tree-Hugging Stalemate

UC Berkeley can't yet proceed with a $140 million athletic center, a judge ruled yesterday, even as the university continued to dismantle structures belonging to protesters trying to save a grove of trees that would be cut down during construction, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Earthquake safety is the major issue; though the project is nearly compliant, environmental groups cheered the ruling. More »

      Protester Eggs Microsoft CEO

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was in Budapest this week to give a lecture to Hungarian university students, but the talk took an unexpected turn when he was pelted with eggs. Unlike Bill Gates, who was hit in the face with a cream pie a decade ago, Ballmer was able to dodge the attack. The protester shouted that Microsoft had stolen money from the Hungarian people, hurled three eggs, and was calmly escorted out. More »

      Thousands Rally for Immigrant Rights

Immigrants and activists took to the streets by the thousands across the US today to put immigration reform back on the election agenda, the AP reports. In Chicago, 15,000 called for an end to deportations and better access to education, and big rallies also took place  in DC, Miami, LA, and Tucson. This May Day turnout, however, didn't appear to rival the 1 million protesters who turned out nationwide in 2006. More »

Torch Back in China After Tumultuous Tour

There were no protests in Hong Kong today as the Olympic torch returned to Chinese soil. But reports were rampant of advocates and would-be protesters being deported or barred from entering the country, the New York Times reports. China says it’s dedicated to allowing peaceful demonstrations, but yesterday deported three pro-Tibetan advocates, and over the weekend denied entry to four more. More »

      Nepal Boots Pro-Tibet US Climber

Nepal deported an American climber yesterday, the Times of India reports, after police at a Mount Everest base camp found a pro-Tibetan banner in his backpack. Nepal, staunchly pro-China, has enacted restrictions—and authorized security forces to use guns—to prevent protests when the Olympic torch ascends the world's tallest mountain in May. More »

      New York Subpoenas Texting Guru

New York lawyers have asked the creator of a mass text-messaging service for records of texts sent during 2004 Republican Convention protests, the New York Times reports. MIT student Tad Hirsch’s TXTmob service was a communication tool for demonstrators and reporters, providing up-to-the-minute data on what was happening where. Aussies Face Protests Over Kangaroo Cull

Australia is planning to cull 400 kangaroos on a military base, and Japan—oft-criticized by Australia for its whaling practices—is jumping at the opportunity to hail its neighbor as hypocritical, reports the Sydney Morning Herald. Not so, says Australia’s PM. The whaling issue is subject to "an agreement between many states, and it goes to whether what is occurring is scientific whaling or not," said Kevin Rudd. More »
