Obama, in Israel, Vows to Work for Peace as President

Barack Obama touched down in Israel late today, promising work on peace negotiations “starting from the minute I’m sworn into office.” He said that while the “historic and special relationship” between the US and Israel “is not going to change,” an American president could be more concerned with “the legitimate difficulties that the Palestinian people are experiencing,” the AP reports. US Terror Watch List Tops 400K

Washington's terror suspect list has topped the 1-million milestone, Reuters reports. That adds up to 400,000 people, including duplicates, about 50,000 of whom are tagged with “no-fly” status. The American Civil Liberties Union slammed the list as poorly managed and too long to be effective. The ACLU has a convincing ally, the AP notes: a former Justice official with the same name as a terror suspect. More »

      Big Brother Comes to Sweden

Don’t believe the hype: “Sweden is no cuddly liberal democracy,” writes Nathalie Rothschild for Spiked, berating her home country for “introducing the most Draconian surveillance law in Europe.” Known as the FRA law but nicknamed "Lex Orwell " by opponents, the legislation gives intelligence agencies the right to intercept all incoming foreign communication. “Emulate Sweden? No thanks.” More »

Obama Advisers Rip Mac Plan to Expel Russia From G-8

John McCain is off-base in his suggestion Russia should be booted from the Group of 8, two former Clinton cabinet officials—and current Obama advisers—write in the Los Angeles Times . Sure, Moscow has departed from democracy, Madeline Albright and William Perry allow, but the US stands a better chance of changing the nation's ways if it's not hung up on “symbolism and protocol.” More »

WTC Rebuilding an Emblem of Can't-Do Politics

We’re having an entertaining campaign season, Daniel Henninger allows in the Wall Street Journal , but the US' fundamental political system is in deep trouble: “It’s an open question whether we have one, or are losing the one we’ve got.” He finds a microcosm in the World Trade Center rebuilding effort, “arguably the greatest political and bureaucratic fiasco in the history of the world.” More »
