      New York cops collared the city’s chief crane inspector on corruption charges today, but officials see no link to last week's fatal crane collapse.       Weld Faulted in NYC Crane Collapse

      City officials investigating a crane accident that killed two workers yesterday think a bad weld may have been to blame, the New York Times reports. The top of the crane, which met all the city's regulations, snapped off and hit a building. The city has suspended all crane construction until Monday and plans to hire new safety engineers. More »

      NYC Crane Collapse Kills at Least 1

      A construction crane collapsed on the Upper East Side of Manhattan today, killing the cab operator and injuring several others, the New York Times reports. The collapse came at 8 am, just 24 hours after a stop-work order on the site was rescinded. The cab of the crane fell 12 stories, crashing into a high-rise condominium tower and through several balconies. The driver, still in the crane, was killed in the fall. More »

      Fla. Crane Crash Kills 2, Injures 4

      Part of a construction crane crashed into a building next to a Miami construction site this afternoon, killing two and injuring at least four, the Miami Herald reports. Workers on an unfinished 46-story luxury condo were raising an extension to connect it with the crane when the extension came loose and fell into a nearby house being used as a construction company office.       NYC Inspector Charged in Crane Collapse

      A New York City worker has been charged with lying to authorities about inspecting the crane that collapsed Saturday, killing seven, the Times reports. Edward Marquette is also accused of falsifying business records, after claiming to have inspected the crane March 4. The Department of Buildings chief again stressed that it’s “highly unlikely” appropriate inspections would have forestalled the accident. More »
