(Newser) - Pakistan rejected Washington's offer today to probe a suicide bombing that killed 53 at a hotel in Islamabad, USA Today reports. “We do not need help,” a government advisor said. “We are competent. We reject it.” The US said FBI agents could track the terrorists who carried out yesterday's bombing, one of several recent terror strikes in Pakistan. More »

9/11 Fund Must Stand Alone to Mark Tragedy

(Newser) - The fund set up to aid the injured and bereaved of 9/11 should not be a model for compensating those affected by disasters like Hurricane Katrina or even other terror attacks, Kenneth Feinberg writes in the Washington Post . The $7 billion September 11th Victim Compensation Fund was a unique "demonstration of American resolve in the wake of tragedy," he argues. More »

At 20, al-Qaeda Is in Decline

(Newser) - Two decades after its founding, al-Qaeda's golden years are over, argues Peter Bergen in the Washington Post. Osama bin Laden's plan has largely backfired: 9/11 neither resulted in US withdrawal from the Middle East, or in the defeat of "impious" Middle Eastern regimes. But while al-Qaeda discredited itself in Iraq and jihadists are less centralized than in 2001, the organization still poses a threat to the West. More »

US Terror Watch List Tops 400K

(Newser) - Washington's terror suspect list has topped the 1-million milestone, Reuters reports. The American Civil Liberties Union slammed the list as poorly managed and too long to be effective. Judge Tosses Out 9/11 Remains Case

(Newser) - A lawsuit to have rubble from the Sept. 11 attacks given a proper burial was dismissed in a US court today, Reuters reports. Victims' families contend that the estimated 1.5 to 1.8 million tons of debris contain human remains, and must be removed from the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. But a judge ruled that New York City had "acted responsibly" in the "difficult and complicated" task of disposing the rubble. More »
