      Panda Cub Taken From Mom

      (Newser) - A giant panda newborn has been taken away from its mother and transferred to an incubator at the Atlanta zoo. Officials said the move was based on “some behaviors by the its mother, Lun Lun," but offered no details. All had seemed well earlier for both the cell-phone-sized cub, born Saturday, and Lun Lun.       Atlanta Panda Now a 2-Time Mama

      (Newser) - A giant panda in Zoo Atlanta became a mommy for the second time last night, and a twin might even be on the way, WSB Atlanta reports. Lun Lun gave birth at 10:10pm, the first panda in the US to do so this year. She previously gave birth in 2006. “We are delighted, proud and elated,” the zoo’s president says. More »

      It's Raining Baby Pandas in China

      (Newser) - Four giant pandas were born within 14 hours of each other at a Chinese breeding center over the weekend, giving a much-needed population boost to the endangered species. Nine-year-old Qiyuan gave birth to twins, and two other 8-year-old pandas each gave birth to a cub in Sichuan province, BBC reports. Only 1,600 giant pandas remain in the wild due to deforestation and rare contact between populations, but 180 are being raised in captivity in China. More »

      Quake-Rattled Pandas Get Hugs, Bamboo

      (Newser) - Zookeepers are helping pandas traumatized by the Sichuan earthquake get back to normal with hugs and games, the Guardian reports. Eight young pandas have been sent to Beijing Zoo and 47 more remain at the Wolong reserve, where the deputy chief said the animals' appetites are back to normal, but warns it will take up to 20 years for the center to fully recover.       Six Pandas Moved From Rattled Reserve

      (Newser) - Six hungry pandas have been transferred to a new reserve in southwest China in the wake of the region's massive earthquake, AFP reports. Their shelters damaged and food scarce, the giant pandas were moved from the renowned Wolong breeding center; eight others will be sent to Beijing tomorrow ahead of their display at the Olympics.       3 Pandas Missing in Quake

      (Newser) - Three giant pandas are missing from the famed Wolong panda reserve that was hit by the magnitude 7.9 earthquake last week in China, AFP reports. Emergency supplies of bamboo—the panda's staple—and apples are being flown into the area to help save the endangered animals. More than 80 are safe—including two offered by Beijing to Taiwan as goodwill gifts. More »
