      Fire Collapsed WTC 7: Report

      (Newser) - Fires, not explosives, caused the collapse of World Trade Center 7—a skyscraper near the twin towers—on Sept. 11, a 3-year US government investigation concludes. Scientists with the National Institute of Standards and Technology say the 47-story tower was destroyed by fires, made worse by a failed sprinkler system after the crumbling twin towers broke a city water main, the AP reports.       Muslim Charities Seek US Seal of Approval

      (Newser) - Muslim charities will voluntarily open up their books to the Better Business Bureau in the hopes of gettiing donors to reach for their wallets again, the Wall Street Journal reports. A coalition of groups requested the BBB's seal of approval to counter the stigma felt since the Sept. 11 attacks. Donations to Muslim charities in the US have withered since the Treasury Department alleged in 2001 that some were funding terrorism. More »

      DNA Links Scientist to Anthrax Attacks

      (Newser) - Investigators have DNA evidence that links biodefense expert Bruce Ivins to the deadly 2001 anthrax attacks, but the case is largely circumstantial, the New York Times reports. Prosecutors have linked the anthrax used in mailings targeting news networks, newspapers, and Congress with a flask used by Ivins at his Maryland lab, but at least 10 people had access to the flask, a source tells the Times. Ivins is also linked to prestamped envelopes used in the attack, which were sold at a Maryland post office he frequented . More »
