      Goodbye, Autos; Hello, Podcar

(Newser) - Forget alternative fuels and dump rusting gas guzzlers altogether for the driverless podcar, which offers "the convenience of an auto without the negatives," Catherine G. Burke writes in the Los Angeles Times . The sleek, electric-powered compartments seat four and use monorail-esque "guideways" to reach select destinations. It sounds futuristic, but England, Sweden and the UAE are already investing in it. More »

Haters, Gas Fail to Crush Hummer Pride

(Newser) - Sure, the Hummer may be going the way of the dinosaur: Sales are down 40% this year on soaring gas and an eco-image problem, and GM is looking to ditch its troubled brand. But for owners, the AP reports, outsized pride remains part of the package. "It definitely sparks some intense reaction from people on both sides," says one Hummer owner, whose baby was attacked last year by baseball-bat-wielding vandals. But to sell? "I love this car," he says. More »

      Phew! Gas Sinks Below $4

(Newser) - Gas prices dipped below $4 today for the first time in almost 2 months, CNN reports. A survey by AAA showed that a gallon of regular cost an average of $3.983, 2 cents lower than yesterday. The move continues a trend over roughly the last week in which prices have dropped 10 cents, and they could fall an additional 25 cents by the end of summer, AAA says. The drop mirrors a similar fall in the cost of crude oil. More »

Victim in Novak Hit-and-Run 'Doing Fine'

(Newser) - The pedestrian struck by Robert Novak's Corvette this week says that other than a dislocated shoulder, he’s “doing fine,” the Washington Post reports. In fact, Don Liljenquist seems more star-struck than car-struck: "Bob Novak is the one that hit me?" the homeless 86-year-old said in a radio interview. "He's a famous journalist! Well, I think that makes it a great story!" More »

      GM Developing Futuristic Windshield

(Newser) - America’s driving population is aging, and GM aims to do something to help older motorists: develop a high-tech windshield that compensates for declining eyesight, the AP reports. The system, now in the research phase, uses lasers and infrared sensors to identify hazards in the road—or perhaps the edge of the road itself in bad weather—and projects them onto the windshield. Daring Architecture Energizes Beijing

(Newser) - Some of the world’s most adventurous architects have found a gung-ho partner in Beijing, the most noticable payoff being the soon-to-be completed CCTV headquarters—"a dazzling reinvention of the skyscraper," writes Paul Goldberger in the New Yorker. Other creations, such as an ovoid peforming arts center dismissed as "the egg" by residents, come off as "silly and cumbersome," but such risks are worth it. More »

      Goodbye, RV: Hello, Real Travel

(Newser) - With gas prices up and on the rise, your Winnebago may soon be stuck in park—but the fall of car culture's ugliest offender will force us to reconnect with better pastimes, writes Garrison Keillor in the Chicago Tribune . “Banjo sales will pick up,” Keillor writes. “The screened porch will come back in style. And the art of storytelling will burgeon along with it.” More »
