      US, Iraqi Forces Launch Major Offensive

      (Newser) - US and Iraqi forces have launched a major operation in Diyala province, which they consider the last major refuge for insurgents near Baghdad, the AP reports. Authorities have set up new checkpoints and banned all but official traffic as troops zero in on the capital city of Baquba, hoping to replicate their successes in Mosul, Baghdad, and Basra. More »

      Suicide Bombers Kill 35 in Iraq

      (Newser) - Two suicide bombers blew themselves up in an Iraqi army recruitment center, killing 35 people and wounding at least 63, the New York Times reports. Most of the dead were recruits. The attack took place in Baquba, the capital of Iraq's ethnically mixed Diyala province.       Huge Car Bomb Kills 40 In Eastern Iraq

      (Newser) - A car bomb ripped through the Iraqi city of Baquba today, leaving at least 40 people dead and more than 70 injured, Reuters reports. The bomb went off near midday outside a restaurant that faces the city's main courthouse. Only a short while later a second bomb went off in the city of Ramadi, killing another 13 people. More »

      Female Bomber Kills Anti-Qaeda Sunni Sheik

      (Newser) - A female suicide bomber assassinated a Sunni Awakening leader in his Diyala province home today, the AP reports, killing the sheik’s bodyguard, cousin, and 5-year-old niece along with him. The woman had come to see the sheik yesterday, saying her husband had been kidnapped and was begging for help. “She came back this morning and nobody checked her,” the sheik’s brother said. More »

      (Newser) - Two thousand U.S. and Iraqi troops launched a large-scale assault on Sunni insurgents in Diyala province last night, pursuing militants who have moved their strongholds outside of Baghdad.
