      Jobs, Sales Send Stocks Diving

(Newser) - The markets plummeted today amid poor jobs data and mixed retail sales, MarketWatch reports. Falling oil futures again failed to stimulate stocks as energy increasingly looks like a victim, not a perpetrator, of the economic slump. The Dow fell 344.65 to close at 11,188.23. The Nasdaq lost 74.69, closing at 2,259.04, and the S&P 500 shed 42.15, settling at 1,232.83. More »

Feds Think Bad Data May Feed Oil Spikes

(Newser) - Commodity regulators, worried that some companies are manipulating crude oil prices by reporting false numbers on supplies and sales, are conducting a wide-ranging probe focused on energy traders, the Wall Street Journal reports. Sources say a big worry is that firms are falsely reporting oil inventories to create the perception that oil is scarce and drive prices higher. More »

Oil Prices Drop for 4th Day on Minimal Gustav Damage

(AP) - Oil prices dipped to just above $108 a barrel today after Hurricane Gustav left oil installations in the Gulf of Mexico largely undamaged. By midday in Europe, light, sweet crude for October delivery was down $1.50 on the New York Mercantile Exchange as the dollar continued to strengthen and attention shifted to slowing global demand for crude. At one point yesterday, it fell as low as $105.46, its lowest level since April.      More »

      Rally Fizzles Despite Oil's Drop

(Newser) - An early rally faded today and the markets closed with mild losses, the Wall Street Journal reports. Oil fell $5.75 as Gulf Coast oil-production facilities appeared to have emerged mostly unscathed from Hurricane Gustav, but the news failed to give equities lasting momentum. The Dow closed down 26.63, at 11,516.92. The Nasdaq fell 18.28, to 2,349.24, while the S&P 500 lost 5.27 to settle at 1,277.56. More »

Oil Down Sharply as Gustav Weakens

(AP) - Oil prices tumbled to $111 a barrel today as Hurricane Gustav weakened along the Gulf Coast, posing less of a threat than forecast to oil drilling and refining operations. A stronger dollar also contributed to the average retail gas price being down slightly at $3.686 a gallon, the AP reports. It was feared last week that pump prices would soar because of the hurricane. More »

Oil Prices Jump $1 as Gustav Shuts Down Gulf Operations

(Newser) - Hurricane Gustav helped boost oil prices today by more than $1 a barrel as energy companies shut down production facilities in the storm's path, reports Reuters.
