      Export Bans Push Food Costs Even Higher

      (Newser) - Alarmed by high food prices and shortages worldwide, some 29 countries are banning or reducing exports of foods to make sure they have enough at home. Such limitations pose a threat to countries that rely on imports, forcing prices up further, the New York Times reports. What’s more, the restrictions are in turn fueling private hoarding.       White House Proposes New Import Safety Rules

      (Newser) - The White House is set to roll out stiffer safety regulations governing imports today, reports the Wall Street Journal . The proposals, prompted by the wave of recalls this year, represent a move toward what the Journal calls "a prevention-based regulatory system that targets the riskiest products."       Hot Dog Chili Sauce Recalled in Botulism Scare

      (Newser) - Federal officials have ordered a recall of certain brands of hot dog chili sauce after they were linked to four cases of botulism in Texas and Indiana. It's not clear how widely the brands were distributed, but the recall includes 10-ounce cans of Castleberry's, Austex and Kroger hot dog chili sauce with "best by" dates from April 30 through May 22, 2009 More »
