The young Washington Capitals finally seem to be getting the hang of this thing called playoff hockey. With just the right mix of brawn and skill, the Capitals stayed alive today by knocking the Philadelphia Flyers off stride early and holding onto the lead with another solid game from goaltender Cristobal Huet, winning 3-2 in Game 5 of their first-round playoff series.

Johan Franzen scored 1:48 into overtime, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 win over the Nashville Predators and a 3-2 lead in their first-round series. Valtteri Filppula, who scored Detroit's first goal, poked the puck away and Franzen ended up with it and beat Dan Ellis with a backhander.

So much for home-ice advantage for New Jersey. With tonight's 5-3 loss to the New York Rangers, the Devils were knocked out of the first round of the NHL's Eastern Conference quarterfinals in the fifth game of the best-of-seven series, bowing to a team that has dominated them the entire season by now winning 11 of 13.

Patrick Marleau and Jonathan Cheechoo made sure San Jose wouldn't squander the momentum gained in Calgary, moving the Sharks within one win of a fourth straight trip to the second round of the playoffs. Marleau scored the tiebreaking goal late in the second period, while Cheechoo added two more in the third sending the Sharks to a 4-3 victory over the Flames last night.

Jose Theodore and the Colorado Avalanche sat back and waited. Then Wojtek Wolski and Paul Stastny pushed the Minnesota Wild to the edge of elimination. Wojtek and Stastny scored 79 seconds apart early in the third period to give Theodore and the patient Avs a 3-2 victory and a 3-2 series lead, after weathering a relentless effort by the Wild.

Danny Briere saved the game for the Flyers in regulation and Mike Knuble got them a win away from the second round in a thrilling double-overtime finish. Knuble poked in his second goal of the series 6:40 into the second OT to give Philadelphia a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals on tonight and a 3-1 series lead.

Stu Barnes and Steve Ott scored third-period goals and Marty Turco came within 7.6 seconds of a shutout, sending the Dallas Stars past the Anaheim Ducks 3-1 tonight. The loss puts the reigning Stanley Cup champions on the brink of elimination. Dallas leads the first-round series 3-1 going into Game 5 in Anaheim tomorrow night.

The Boston Bruins worked hard to get a break and Carey Price gave a big one right to them. Glen Metropolit scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period after Price caused a reckless turnover and Boston went on to beat the Canadiens 5-1 tonight to avoid elimination in their first-round series. Tim Thomas stopped 31 shots for the Bruins.

The NHL's top team now finds itself in a first-round fight. Dan Hamhuis and Shea Weber scored in 32-second span in the first period, and the Nashville Predators evened their Western Conference playoff series against the No. 1-seeded Detroit Red Wings with a 3-2 victory in Game 4 on Wednesday night.

Marc Staal pushed the New York Rangers within a win of the second round. No tricks or funky screens were needed to beat Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils on this night. Staal scored his first NHL playoff goal with 3:13 left in Game 4, and the Rangers earned a 5-3 victory and 3-1 series lead in the series over New Jersey.

The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Ottawa Senators 3-1 and completed a four-game sweep of their NHL first-round playoff series on Wednesday. Evgeni Malkin and Jarko Ruutu scored second-period goals, Sidney Crosby scored into an empty net with 7.5 seconds remaining and had an assist, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 21 saves for Pittsburgh, which its first playoff series win since 2001.

Joe Thornton's first goal of playoffs was a big one. Thornton scored the winner with just 9.4 seconds left in regulation to give the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 win over the Calgary Flames in Game 4 on Tuesday night, evening their first-round series. Thornton tipped Douglas Murray's shot from the point past Flames goalie Miikka Kiprusoff to win a game the Sharks trailed twice.
