Weinsteins Sign 7-Year Deal With Showtime

(Newser) - Showtime and the Weinstein Company have inked an exclusive 7-year movie deal, giving the pay TV network a replacement for the slate of films it lost when Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate decamped in April and teamed up to launch a rival network, Variety reports. Showtime had balked at what it called excessive license fee demands; all the CEO would say about the fee the Weinsteins will be getting is that it's "a price that is consistent with today's marketplace." Magic of 'This American Life' Returns to Small Screen

(Newser) - The stories on the small-screen version of “This American Life” start out small—a husband’s protest over the oppressive American trend of lawn-mowing, a young man living with spinal muscular atrophy—and become something universal, both dark and light, even a little magical, writes Heather Havrilesky on Salon.com. On the second season, which premieres tonight on Showtime, everyday snapshots of people’s lives become art. More »

'Tudors': Flashy Fiction Is Far From Fact

(Newser) - In the battle of fact versus flair, it’s pretty obvious which side “The Tudors” comes down on. Showtime’s steamy period soap opera, which premiers its second season tonight, trades a chubby, tight-wearing Henry VIII for slim, sexy Jonathan Rhys Meyers. “It’s sloppy filmmaking,” one historian tells ABC News. “Not one female costume in there is correct for the period. It’s so off the mark it’s laughable.” More »

HBO Struggles for Post- Sopranos Hits

(Newser) - HBO, at 36 years old no longer a bold young upstart of a network, is struggling to come up with hits to match The Sopranos and Sex & The City, the Wall Street Journal reports. Changes in the top ranks have meant shifts in direction: The Texas-set Lily Tomlin drama 12 Miles of Bad Road HBO was ditched after execs saw the first few episodes. More »

      Chili Peppers Sue Over 'Californication'

(Newser) - The Red Hot Chili Peppers are suing Showtime for stealing the title of their 1999 hit album. The cable network's "Californication" series, which stars David Duchovny, also features a character called Dani California—the title of a 2006 Chili Peppers song. The suit, for unfair competition, dilution of the value of the name, and unjust enrichment, seeks damages and an injunction against further use of the title. More »

      It's not HBO— It's Showtime

(Newser) - HBO was the network that was going to transcend television—and it did. But if you canceled your HBO subscription after the "Sopranos' " annoyingly ambiguous conclusion, Esquire has a suggestion to full the gap in your premium cable lineup. Showtime has been pushing the envelope with shows like "Weeds"  and "Dexter." More »
