Insurgents shift to smaller devices as security tightens

(Newser) - Small explosives dubbed "sticky IEDs" are contributing to a growing feeling of unease in Baghdad, the New York Times reports. The fist-sized bombs attached to magnets or adhesives are hard to detect, easy for a furtive bomber to put in place and have become the weapon of choice for militants thwarted by tighter security in their efforts to plant bigger bombs. (AP) - Indonesia executed three Islamic militants today for helping plan and carry out the 2002 Bali bombings that killed 202 people, many of them foreign tourists, lawyers and relatives said. Imam Samudra and brothers Amrozi Nurhasyim and Ali Ghufron were executed at 11:20 p.m. several miles from their high security prison on Nusakambangan island, said Qadar Faisal, one of their attorneys. (AP) - The US has killed a senior leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq suspected of masterminding one of the deadliest bombings in Baghdad, the AP reports. Mahir Ahmad Mahmud al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Assad or Abu Rami, allegedly directed the cell responsible for a  series of blasts that killed more than 200 people in 2006, as well as car bomb and suicide attacks this week targeting two Shiite mosques that killed 2 dozen. Messages between militants and spy agency intercepted

(Newser) - American intelligence has determined that members of Pakistan's powerful spy agency helped to plan July's bombing of the Indian embassy in Kabul, reports the New York Times . US authorities based their findings on intercepted messages between the attackers and Pakistani intelligence officers. Nation on alert after series of blasts rocks market, hospital

(Newser) - India steeled for more attacks today as the death toll in a series of bombings soared to 49. A little known group called the Indian Mujahideen has claimed responsibility for 17 blasts that rocked a busy market and hospital in the town of Ahmedabad yesterday. Police today found two other unexploded bombs in the town, CNN reports. As many as 200 people were hurt in the attacks, a day after nine similar explosions in Bangalore killed two. More »

Series of small blasts hit Bangalore, Ahmedabad

(Newser) - A series of small explosions rocked an Indian city for the second straight day today, Reuters reports. At least 29 people were killed and 88 injured in a wave of blasts in Ahmedabad, which has a history of Hindu-Muslim tensions. Yesterday, at least one person was killed in a similar series of bombings in the technology hub of Bangalore. No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks. More »

Second attack in as many days targeting reconstruction efforts

(Newser) - Two US troops and two US government employees were killed today during a suicide bombing at a local council building in Baghdad's Sadr City, the LA Times reports. The blast, the second this week that targeted Americans meeting with local officials, also claimed the lives of two Iraqis and wounded several others. Yesterday a gunman killed two US soldiers as they left a municipal building about 15 miles from the capital. More »
