Judge Tosses Out 9/11 Remains Case

A lawsuit to have rubble from the Sept. 11 attacks given a proper burial was dismissed in a US court today, Reuters reports. Victims' families contend that the estimated 1.5 to 1.8 million tons of debris contain human remains, and must be removed from the Fresh Kills landfill on Staten Island. But a judge ruled that New York City had "acted responsibly" in the "difficult and complicated" task of disposing the rubble. More »

Brinkley: 'I Thought We Were Happy'

Christie Brinkley took the stand today in her increasingly lurid divorce trial, weeping as she recalled how her porn-loving husband cheated on her with a teenager, the New York Daily News reports. When an opposing lawyer reminded all she was an actress during a largely unsuccessful cross-examination, the supermodel shot back, "I'm no Meryl Streep." During a break, hubby Peter Cook sniped, " Shrek was more believable." More »

World Frowns on American For-Profit Bail System

For the rest of the world, America’s bail bonds industry is a horrifying concept. To critics, the system is unfair and corrupt, forcing even innocent people to pay up. But it’s also extremely effective. More »

Spears Slapped With K-Fed's Legal Fees

In a major insult on top of the injury of losing her kids, pop princess Britney Spears has been ordered to pay nearly all her ex-husband's legal fees in their ongoing custody battle, according to court papers filed yesterday. Spears must cover $120,000 of Kevin Federline's $154,000 legal fees because of the "notable disparity" between their incomes, the judge ruled. Wig Out! Brit Courts Could Ditch The Hairpieces

Judges and barristers in England and Wales have been wearing horse-hair wigs and black gowns to court since the 1600s, but that could all change depending on the results of an official survey seeking opinions from those who sport the hairpieces. The Lord Chief Justice will make a final decision. A change is only being considered for civil and family courts; criminal court dress will remain the same. More »
