      Funny Car Racer Killed in NHRA Crash

      Drag racer Scott Kalitta was killed yesterday after his Funny Car burst into flames as it crashed in an NHRA race, AP reports. The Toyota Solara driven by the 46-year-old former Top Fuel champ had been going 300 mph in a race to qualify for the Lucas Oil NHRA SuperNationals in New Jersey. “We are deeply saddened and pass along our sincere condolences to the entire Kalitta family," said a statement from the NHRA. Coming off a freeway in rush hour, the truck hit a bus stop, wedged under a train overpass, and crashed "several steps" up the train platform escalator, one witness told the Chicago Tribune .       Three-quarters of vehicles on the road today would fail a proposed tougher standard for automobile roof strength, reports the Wall Street Journal. The current standard, unchanged since 1973, requires that car roofs withstand a force equivalent to 1.5 times the vehicle’s weight, but it exempts those more than 6,000 lbs.—including today's hulking SUVs, which are most likely to roll onto their roofs.       A driver skidded into a crowd of street-race spectators in Maryland this morning and killed eight people, but later told police he was not part of the race, the Washington Post reports.
