Dowd Dumped From Straight Talk Express

(Newser) - Straight talk not only got New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd banned from the McCain-Palin campaign planes, reports the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette , it got her marooned in Pittsburgh. After writing a scathing satire of Sarah Palin's candidacy—harsh but hardly unprecedented for the gleefully snarky writer—a stunned Dowd was left behind in the middle of a campaign swing, forcing her to overnight in a local hotel while the rest of the press pack traveled on. Five Problems With Environmental Reporting

(Newser) - If you’re flummoxed by ever-shifting information on climate change and the environment, just think what the folks who report it must be going through. Deadline pressures and conflicting scientific papers have reporters struggling to provide editors with sellable stories, the Columbia Journalism Review reports, and the results don’t always accurately represent the issue. CJR nails five big issues with environmental journalism: More »

Ex-Army Doc to Get $5.8M in Anthrax Case

(Newser) - The Justice Department will pay nearly $6 million to an ex-Army scientist for naming him in an anthrax probe 7 years ago, the AP reports. The feds settled out of court today for calling Steven Hatfill a "person of interest" in the still-unsolved case, but continued to "deny all liability in connection with Dr. Hatfill's claims,” a DOJ spokesman said. Hatfill, who has never been charged, accused officials of trying to smear him. More »

Reporters Can't Let Trauma Stop Them

(Newser) - One North Carolina reporter is still haunted by the horror of rapes and murders she witnessed every day. But her empathy also made her a better reporter, and that’s worth it, Melissa Manware writes in Quill . When readers, particularly former victims, responded to stories, it made “the work worth the heartache.” But Manware is still tormented by the ringing phone of a cyclist killed by a city bus. More »

Obama Apologizes for Calling Reporter 'Sweetie'

(Newser) - Barack Obama has apologized to a reporter for an off-the-cuff term of endearment, reports the Detroit News. While the candidate was stumping in Detroit, the TV journalist called out a question, and he responded: "Hold on one second, sweetie.” He later left her a phone message, calling his remark “a bad habit” that meant “no disrespect.” More »

      R. Kelly Deputies Rebuff Reporter Over Doughnuts

(Newser) - It seems Chicago cops are dead serious about keeping the media on a short leash during the R. Kelly child-pornography trial: Today, deputies rejected doughnuts from radio reporter Brendan Greeley, worried it could be interpreted as a sign of favoritism. Greeley was told he was “being a distraction” and threatened with the revocation of his media credentials, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. More »

      Romney Tussles With Reporter

(Newser) - Mitt Romney had a dust-up with a reporter in South Carolina today, CBS News reports, when the reporter essentially accused the candidate of lying. As Romney was saying he was not beholden to lobbyists and didn’t have one “running his campaign,” the reporter interjected, “That’s not true,” referring to Romney ally and lobbyist Ron Kaufman. Video shows the back-and-forth get more animated. More »

'07 a Deadly Year for Journalists

(Newser) - This year has been the deadliest for journalists in more than a decade, reports AP.  A media watchdog group said yesterday that 64 journalists in 17 countries have died while covering the news. Most of the deaths—31—occurred in Iraq, which leads the list for the fifth year. "Working as a journalist in Iraq remains one of the most dangerous jobs on the planet," said a spokesman for the Committee to Protect Journalists. More »

      Rather Sues CBS for $70M

(Newser) - Dan Rather has filed a $70 million lawsuit against CBS and its corporate parent, claiming bias and fraud in the investigation of the broadcast that brought him down—and then violated his subsequent contract with “60 Minutes.” The filing says Rather was made “a scapegoat” in order “to pacify the White House,” the Times reports. Couric in Iraq: Lousy Ratings, Good Journalism

(Newser) - Katie Couric's trip to Iraq and Syria was a failure as a ratings gimmick but pretty good journalism, say critics. The "CBS Evening News" tied a record low of 5.5 million viewers last week, which the network blames on US Open coverage. And Harvard journalism prof Marvin Kalb says the broadcasts were well-done and informative, the AP reports. More »

CBS Has No Plans to Boot Couric Off News

(Newser) - In signing Katie Couric to anchor "CBS Evening News" last year, the network probably didn’t expect ratings to hit historic lows. But CBS is sticking with the underperforming star, according to a network executive, who said it was “the second inning at the latest” in the long game of gaining ground on ABC and NBC, according to the Hollywood Reporter .
