Scientists Explore Testicular Stem Cell Alternative

(AP) - Cells taken from human testicles seem as versatile as stem cells derived from embryos, researchers reported today in Nature . The new type of stem cells could be useful for growing personalized replacement tissues to treat diseases like Parkinson's and diabetes and for spinal cord injuries. But because of their source, they would help only half the world's population: men. More »

Scientists Pull Stem Cells From Wisdom Teeth

(Newser) - Japanese scientists have sidestepped the controversial use of embryos in stem-cell research by growing the cells from extracted wisdom teeth, the Telegraph reports. Pulp removed 3 years ago from a 10-year-old girl, then frozen, was fostered in a lab, with research-ready stem cells the result. "I hope this will prove to be a major breakthrough," one scientist says. More »

Scientists See Breakthrough in Stem Cell Production

(Newser) - A US team has made a breakthrough in stem cell research, growing new nerve cells from the skin of patients suffering from Lou Gehrig's disease, or ALS. The work marks the first time disease-specific stem cells have been generated from a patient. The method could be used to tailor replacement cells to create a revolutionary treatment for the fatal degenerative disease, reports the Daily Telegraph . Conservatives Set for Stand on GOP Platform

(Newser) - Conservatives are concerned John McCain might be a maverick with a pen, and are gearing up for a fight on the Republican Party's official election platform, the Washington Post reports. Loath to imagine where McCain might go on climate change, immigration, stem cells and more, activists are already on platform watch. “There’s no question it’s going to be changed radically,” laments one. Multiple Adult Stem Cells May Make Treatment Trickier

(Newser) - There is probably more than one type of adult stem cell in the intestines and other organs, a University of Utah researcher finds—which means therapies based on the cells could be more complicated than expected. Scientists had hoped a single stem cell could fix damage to an entire organ, but the findings suggest the power of one cell could be limited, the BBC notes. More »

Stem Cells Are Beating Boy's Deadly Disease

(Newser) - A stem cell treatment has apparently cured a 2-year-old boy's rare genetic disease, the Los Angeles Times reports. Nate Liao suffered a disorder that made his skin so fragile, it had to be wrapped in bandages at all times. Now the fatal disease is retreating, and Nate is eating, dressing, and playing with other kids for the first time. More »

UK Approves Research on Human-Animal Embryos

(Newser) - British legislators have voted to allow scientists to create hybrid human-animal embryos for stem cell research, the Daily Telegraph reports. The new laws will give British scientists more freedom to pursue hybrid research than those of any other country. The vote passed by a huge margin after supporters of the research argued that it could someday save millions of lives. More »

      Human-Animal Embryos Created

(Newser) - In a brave new world breakthrough, British scientists for the first time have created animal-human hybrid embryos, the London Times reports. The nuclei of cow eggs were removed and replaced with ones from a human cell, creating "admixed" embryos—or "cybrids" whose genetic material is 99.9% human. Electricity jolted the cybrids to life and they survived for three days. The research team aims to create longer-living cybrids for use in stem cell research. More »

      Angry Students Block Pope Visit

(Newser) - Pope Benedict XVI has scrapped plans to speak at a prestigious Italian university after unprecedented protests by furious students and professors who accused him of justifying Galileo's trial and "affronting" people of science, the Los Angeles Times reports. The pope once described as "reasonable" the 400-year-old heresy trial of Galileo, and Benedict's negative take on science now extends to issues like stem cell research and evolution, critics charge. Third Team Turns Skin Into Stem Cells

(Newser) - A third team of scientists has successfully turn skin cells into stem cells that can be coaxed into becoming any kind of tissue. The American researchers are the first group to manage the feat with a volunteer's cells, not cells grown in a lab, which demonstrates that such cells could be widely available. More »

Embryonic Stem-Cell Issue Still Dogs GOP

(Newser) - Last week's breakthrough in stem-cell research—the creation of cells from skin rather than embryos—is a tremendous scientific advance, writes Michael Kinsley in Time magazine. But the new science doesn't let hypocritical GOP politicians dodge the controversy over embryonic stem cells: They will still be risking human lives with inconsistent objections, he writes. More »

      New Stem Cells Cancer-Free

(Newser) - Scientists who recently turned skin into embryonic stem cells are now tweaking the process to reduce cancer risk, Reuters reports. A team at Kyoto University grew live mice with a cell cocktail, but said the rodents grew tumors. So they nixed a gene called c-Myc1 and the next batch came out tumor-free. They have also made human cells without the cancer-causing element. More »
