Advocates for Pit Bulls Work to Dispel Image

(Newser) - The pit bull has long been considered a breed prone to violence—a generalization the Michael Vick case did nothing to help. But a California couple is working to show people that the dogs have become victims of stereotype and, more importantly, widespread abuse. And they're using some of the dogs rescued from Vick's home to prove the point. The Los Angeles Times profiles the couple and their mission. More »

      80 Killed in Afghan Bombing

(Newser) - A suicide blast today killed at least 80 in a crowd of spectators watching a dog fight in the Afghan city of Kandahar. Nobody claimed responsibility for the attack, but local authorities believe it was the work of the Taliban, which has a large presence in the area, BBC reports. Militia leaders watching the dog fight were the likely target of the attack. More »

      Vick's Fighters Now Cuddlers

(Newser) - Many of the pit bulls Michael Vick illegally trained to fight have better days ahead, the AP reports. Experts have evaluated the more than 50 dogs taken from the quarterback’s property—and only one showed aggression. The rest were transported to rescue groups nationwide; 13 took an unlikely cross-country trip to Oakland to be groomed for eventual foster care. More »

Feds: Vick Should Pay $1M for Dogs

(Newser) - The feds want Michael Vick to pick up the nearly $1-million tab for the 48 pit bulls they seized from his home. Prosecutors say the Atlanta Falcon, who surrendered to authorities yesterday to begin serving his time, should pay for the seizure, care, and adoption of the dogs, which they allege were abused at Vick’s home. Sentencing isn’t until early December, but the government filed a motion today to have the money frozen now. More »

      Now the Falcons Want $16M

(Newser) - First the dogs and dope, now the cash: the Falcons want payback from Michael Vick. And they'll argue for $16 million of it in a hearing set for tomorrow. It's all bonus money that the Falcons say Vick owes, because his guilty plea on federal dogfighting charges violates his 10-year, $130 million contract. The players association will argue that Vick already earned that cash and the Falcons can't take it back. More »

      Whoopi Muted in ‘View’ Debut

(Newser) - The Whoopi Goldberg era on "The View" began with little resemblance to Rosie O'Donnell's, as Goldberg struggled to get a word in edgewise in her debut yesterday. The Oscar-winning comic was lost in mindless patter and jarring segues, with "I don't know if that's a good idea" perhaps her wittiest repartee, observes Washington Post TV critic Lisa de Moraes.
