Jill Biden is not your typical vice presidential spouse. She has four degrees, three kids, and a teaching career that’s unlikely to take a back seat to her Washington duties, Politico reports. “She’ll still teach in the spring, but hopefully near Washington,” said a colleague at the Delaware community college where she works now. "She’s had some offers I think from four-year schools, but she said, ‘That’s not me.'"

The nation's last two vice presidents loomed large in Washington—Al Gore leading on the environment and technology and Dick Cheney practically a shadow president. But when Joe Biden succeeds arguably the most powerful No. 2 in American history, the job is expected to shrink back to its original size. As the New York Times reports, Biden will serve primarily as a counselor and adviser to Barack Obama, and he will not receive a portfolio.

Few countries have vice presidents, and the US shouldn’t either, Bruce Ackerman writes in the LA Times . The founding fathers established the office as a consolation prize, the Yale law and political science professor explains, and it's morphed into a ticket-balancing slot. "This isn't a question on which the founders deserve any deference," he writes. "They designed their system for a very different political world."

Asked by ABC's Charlie Gibson in her first TV interview since joining the ticket if she felt prepared, she responded, "I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we'll be ready. I'm ready."

Like Palin, he was supposed to connect an old moderate to the party base and win over the Midwest with small-town charm. And like Palin, he got a face-full of negative press. “It sure sounded familiar,” Quayle told the L os Angeles Times .

Sarah Palin earned roars from the primed Republican crowd last night in St. Paul—but it remains to be seen whether she can translate that enthusiasm to undecided voters, writes Adam Nagourney in the New York Times . “It’s more difficult with someone of her background to go on the attack than it would be for Joe Biden” with his years of experience, a former GOP senator tells Nagourney.

Joe Biden accepted his party's nomination to be vice president tonight, then took to the podium to pound the theme that John McCain will offer nothing more than a third Bush term, CNN reports. "John McCain doesn't seem to get it," said Biden, stressing his own humble roots and decrying the dire financial straits of blue-collar families.
