      7 Russian Athletes Suspended for Doping

      (Newser) - Seven female athletes from Russia were suspended today for doping violations, a potentially devastating blow to the nation's medal hopes just a week before the Olympics begin, the New York Times reports. Five of the women, all members of Russia's track and field team, were scheduled to compete in the Games. They have 14 days to appeal, but it appears unlikely they will be running in Beijing. More »

      (Newser) - Disgraced Olympic gold medalist Tim Montgomery was sentenced to 46 months yesterday for his part in a check-fraud scam, the Washington Post reports. Montgomery, who still faces heroin-dealing charges, once held the 100m world record but was stripped of it for doping. Though the PGA Tour isn't adopting the World Anti-Doping Association list of banned substances, the AP reports, it has its own laundry list, which includes anabolic agents, hormones, stimulants, masking agents and narcotics.       (Newser) - Cyclist Floyd Landis lost his doping case today, and must give up his 2006 Tour de France title after arbitrators voted to uphold test results showing Landis cheated during his victory. He was banned from cycling until 2009; short a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the American will be the first to lose a Tour title. More »

      Tour Leader Kicked Out by His Own Team

      (Newser) - In the latest blow to the Tour de France, race leader Michael Rasmussen was kicked out of the event yesterday by his own team for lying about his whereabouts during doping tests. Rasmussen was the third rider ejected in less than 48 hours as the rapidly mounting doping scandal threatened to destroy the event.  Rasmussen was leading by 3:10 and had just won Stage 17. More »
