Poland Agrees to Host US Missile System

(Newser) - Poland and the US signed a preliminary agreement to install US interceptor missiles on Polish soil today, the Telegraph reports. The move is widely seen as a response to Russian aggression in Georgia, a notion buttressed by the Polish prime minister. “The events in the Caucasus show clearly that such security guarantees are indispensable,” said Donald Tusk. Talks have been ongoing for a year. More »

      Iraq Minister Demands Exit Timetable

(Newser) - Iraq won’t accept any security deal that doesn’t include strict guidelines for a US withdrawal, National Security Adviser Mouwaffak al-Rubaie said today. The US waved off similar statements from Nouri al-Maliki yesterday, saying they didn’t believe the Iraqi PM really wanted a timetable, but Rubaie’s comments left little to interpretation. “Our stance in the negotiations … will be strong,” he said. “We will not accept any memorandum of understanding that doesn’t have specific dates to withdraw foreign forces.” More »

Timetable Needed to End 'Foreign Presence' in Iraq: PM

(Newser) - Iraq is ready to be rid of US troops, its prime minister said today, and he wants a timetable. “We are looking at the necessity of terminating the foreign presence on Iraqi lands and restoring full sovereignty,” Nouri al-Maliki told Arab diplomats, saying the “memorandum of understanding” being negotiated with the US would include either outright departure or a timetable, Reuters reports. Security Talks Hit 'Dead End,' Iraqi PM Says

(AP) - Talks with the US on a longterm security deal have hit an impasse over fears the US will infringe on Iraqi sovereignty, the nation's prime minister said. "The first drafts presented left us at a dead end," said Nouri al-Maliki. "So, we left these first drafts, and the negotiations will continue with new ideas until the sides reach a formula that preserves Iraq's sovereignty." More »

      Britain, Spain Soften Over Rock

(Newser) - Britain and Spain have worked out a compromise on Gibraltar that will pave the way for the EU to sign some important treaties, Reuters reports. Treaties on child protection and aviation had been held up for years because Spain balked at plans to let officials in the British enclave administer the treaties. Communications on the treaties will now go through London. More »

      US Expedition Heads to Arctic

(Newser) - Diving into the international scramble to grab parts of the Arctic, a US Coast Guard cutter is voyaging north this week to determine if any of the underwater territory can be claimed for America. The four-week expedition, which starts Friday, will use sonar technology to map the northern Chukchi Cap, an underwater plateau which extends from Alaska. More »

      EU Leaders OK New Treaty

(Newser) - EU negotiators pulled an all-nighter and the German chancellor played a risky game of chicken with Poland en route to reaching an agreement on a treaty that will govern the 27-nation body. The deal resurrects much of the ill-fated 2005 constitution while streamlining bureaucracy and introducing a top foreign-policy position intended to beef up the union's worldwide clout. More »
