New Firefox's Speed Will Smoke Chrome, Mozilla Says

(Newser) - The next version of Firefox will be faster than Google's Chrome, the fastest browser out there, Mozilla said today, according to TechCrunch. Chrome is 28% slower on XP and 16% slower on Vista than Firefox 3.1, which releases this year, Mozilla claims. By using the new engine TraceMonkey, one coder says, the browser will "easily eclipse even the fastest instance of Chrome." More »

      Firefox 3 Rocks

(Newser) - Download Firefox 3, out today. That’s what Michael Calore suggests on Webmonkey. The new version of the open-source browser lets users set application-specific links on Web pages—such as “mailto” links—to launch webapps instead of other applications—say, Gmail instead of Outlook. It also supports using webapps offline, allowing users to synch them up when they’re back on line. Read on to see Calore's reasons for saying the browser's among 2008’s “most kick-ass software releases.” More »

(Newser) - Early tests have found Mozilla's latest version of Firefox is much speedier than earlier versions and it runs rings around its rivals, PC World reports. One blogger found Firefox 3 Beta 4 was nearly twice as fast as Safari and Opera, and the Beta 4 version, and three times faster than Explorer. Apple's iPhone Rules Restrict Competition

(Newser) - Apple’s iPhone software development kit is facing criticism from net neutrality and antitrust critics, Computerworld reports. Apple has indicated that voice-over-IP programs like Skype will not be allowed on the iPhone’s AT&T network, as its a direct competitor for AT&T’s voice service. Can Firefox Stick to its Open Source Roots?

(Newser) - The image of the Mozilla Foundation is that of Internet underdog—an open source, non-profit network of developers whose Firefox browser has nabbed 15-20% of the market from Microsoft's Internet Explorer. But as the New York Times reports, a Google tie-in deal has enriched the foundation's for-profit Mozilla Corporation subsidiary to the tune of $74 million in total assets, making it more like a typical Silicon Valley startup.
