Held without a shot until late in the third period, Alex Ovechkin stole the puck and netted the tiebreaking goal with 4 1/2 minutes remaining, leading the Washington Capitals to a 5-4 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first-round series Friday. Ovechkin also set up the first of two goals by defenseman Mike Green.

Marty Turco put on an acrobatic show in goal and the Dallas Stars' power play provided more than enough offense to put the defending Stanley Cup champions in an early playoff hole. Turco earned his fourth career postseason shutout and Dallas defeated the Anaheim Ducks 4-0 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Thursday night.

Evgeni Nabokov made sure the Sharks left San Jose with something to show for all those shots in their first two playoff games. Nabokov made 21 saves in his sixth career postseason shutout, and rookie Torrey Mitchell scored a power-play goal in the Sharks' 2-0 victory over the Calgary Flames on Thursday night, evening their first-round series at a game apiece.

Henrik Zetterberg broke a tie at 6:54 of the third period and added an empty-net goal, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Thursday night in the postseason opener for both teams. Dominik Hasek, playing in his 116th playoff game, made 19 saves for the top-seeded Wings.

Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn scored goals 1:28 apart in the opening minutes of their playoff debuts, and the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins 4-1 in Game 1 of their first-round playoff series Thursday night. Carey Price also made his playoff debut, stopping 17 shots for Montreal, which finished first overall in the Eastern Conference.

The Calgary Flames are off to a fine playoff start, and the San Jose Sharks can start worrying again. Stephane Yelle scored two goals, Miikka Kiprusoff made 37 saves and the seventh-seeded Flames stunned the NHL's second-best regular season team in their first-round opener, beating the Sharks 3-2 on Wednesday night. Dion Phaneuf also scored a power-play goal for the Flames.

Joe Sakic added another line to his amazing playoff resume. Sakic tipped in a shot by Ruslan Salei from the point midway through the first overtime period, his eighth career playoff goal in extra time, to send the Colorado Avalanche past the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Wednesday night. The goal gave Colorado a 1-0 lead in this first-round series.

Defenseman Mattias Norstrom's rare goal put his team ahead for good late in the second period as the Dallas Stars rallied to beat the San Jose Sharks 4-2 tonight in a regular-season finale that included 160 penalty minutes. Dallas erased a 2-0 deficit on goals by Antti Miettinen, Stu Barnes and Norstrom in the final 10 minutes of the second period.
