Leafs blow past Islanders, Flyers take down Thrashers

(Newser) - Sean Avery scored twice for the New York Rangers in their 5-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins. The win puts New York back on track after a two-game skid broke their 13-game point streak. Sidney Crosby missed his third straight game with teh Pens to nurse his high ankle sprain, and the reigning MVP is expected to miss at least one more, reports the Associated Press. Canucks net 3-1 win on twins' collaboration

(Newser) - Vancouver avenged last week's 2-0 loss to Phoenix by scraping together a 3-1 win out of second-chance shots, the Vancouver Sun reports. Daniel Sedin twice got the puck near enough to the Coyotes net for his twin Henrik to slip it past Ilya Bryzgalov, and Taylor Pyatt scored off a Kevin Bieksa shot to secure the critical win. More »

Minnesota alone atop Northwest

(Newser) - Three different Minnesota players scored as the Wild topped the Colorado Avalanche 3-1 and gained sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division. Minnesota has a two-point lead over second place Calgary and Colorado. The Wild sorely needed this victory against their division rival, after losing nine of their previous 13 contests overall, according to the Associated Press. More »

Blue Jackets top Red Wings, Panthers over Thrashers

(Newser) - Backup goalie Dwayne Roloson brought his A-game today as Edmonton bested San Jose in a shootout, 2-1. The Oilers ended a franchise-record 11-game winning streak for the Sharks. Ales Hemsky scored the lone goal for Edmonton in regulation, while Robert Nilsson and Fernando Pisani were credited with goals in the shootout. (Newser) - It was four points apiece for Evgeni Malkin and Petr Sykora as the Penguins dominated the Flyers today, 7-1. The win was Pittsburgh’s second-consecutive game with seven goals, and comes two days after the team learned they’d be without Sidney Crosby for another three games, reports the Associated Press. (Newser) - It took a shootout for the Capitals to beat the Bruins today, as Alexander Semin and Viktor Kozlov scored Washington’s two overtime goals, giving the Caps a 2-1 win. (Newser) - The Sharks did all their damage in the first period last night, first scoring 70 seconds in and then getting three goals within three minutes to put the game well out of St. Louis's reach.
