Drug Smugglers' Subs Could Open US to Terrorists

(Newser) - Semi-submersible boats used to smuggle drugs into the US could provide a path into the country for terrorists or their weapons, the Boston Globe reports. “If drug cartels can ship up to 10 tons of cocaine in a semi-submersible, they can clearly ship or rent space to a terrorist organization,” wrote a Navy official in a military journal. Japan Warned of Nuclear Leak from US Sub

(AP) - The US Navy has warned Japan that a small amount of radiation may have leaked from an American nuclear submarine during its recent visits to two southern ports. The US said the amount of radioactivity was negligible, but the news could cause a stir in Japan, where both the US military presence and its nuclear vessels are controversial. More »

      Mexico Seizes Homemade Drug Submarine

(AP) - Mexico's navy seized a homemade submarine carrying a drug shipment off the Pacific coast yesterday and arrested its four-man crew. Cocaine Moves by Submarine

(Newser) - Cocaine traffickers have embraced a startling new method to transport their product into America, the Economist reports: homemade submersibles. The cartels themselves seem to be producing the small craft, which descend to just below the waterline. They sport large cargo space and fuel tanks that allow them to sail far out to sea before dropping their payloads. More »

Wait a Second! Sub Watch Raises More Questions

(Newser) - Scientists had hoped that the watch belonging to the commander of the HL Hunley would give them some clues as to why the Confederate submarine sank in 1864. But they've been left only with more questions, AP reports. The watch stopped quickly rather than winding down—possibly because of an explosion, but it may have been broken sooner or lost time in damp conditions. More »
