(Newser) - A massive explosion in a Ukrainian coal mine trapped at least 37 miners and injured four others above ground, the AP reports. Several buildings were flattened. The mine had been ruled too dangerous to use, and the miners had been working to improve conditions. It was the biggest blast in Ukrainian coal-mining history. Rescuers were racing to the scene. Report: Utah Mine Collapse Was Avoidable

(Newser) - Mining officials concealed information that could have prevented the deaths of nine miners in Utah last year, says a congressional report out today. The August disaster followed the collapse of a nearby section of the mine, which indicated that the terrain was unsafe—but officials at the Crandall Mine didn’t report the earlier incident to federal safety authorities, the New York Times reports. 80 Dead, 20 Missing in Ukraine

(Newser) - Rescuers today battled the fiery remnants of a deadly coal mine blast in Ukraine as the death toll was revised upward to at least 80, Reuters reports. Twenty miners are still missing, and given the intense temperatures and lack of air, chances of survival are slim. The explosion is the deadliest accident since Ukraine gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. More »

Mine Operation Continues With 7th Hole and Camera

(Newser) - Reversing an earlier decision, recovery efforts will continue at the Utah mine where six miners were trapped three weeks ago. A seventh hole will be drilled into the mine, and a camera will be dropped into a previously bored hole to search for signs of life. Family members requested that the new hole be drilled to the kitchen area, where the men were supposed to congregate in an emergency. More »

Families Lash Owners for Abandoning Trapped Miners

(Newser) - Angry relatives of six men missing for two weeks in a Utah mine collapse have accused owners and federal officials of quitting on the rescue effort and leaving the miners for dead. Officials conceded yesterday that the miners may never be found in the mountain, still quivering from seismic activity, AP reports.   More »

      Floods Trap 180 Chinese Miners

(Newser) - Flash flooding complicated efforts in eastern China today to rescue 180 miners trapped underground, and officials warned the men had little chance of survival. Pummeled by hours of downpour, an overwhelmed river breached its levee and gushed rushing waters into the Shandong coal mine, where 756 people had been working. Most were able to escape, leaving 172 trapped. More »

Mine Collapse Survivor Didn't Hear the Cave-In

(Newser) - One of the four miners who escaped the Crandall Canyon collapse that trapped six men told the AP he didn't hear or feel the cave-in as it was occurring. Tim Curtis, who was near the mine's entrance at the time, heard of the collapse via text message on an personal emergency device. "It's just like you are here and three miles away are you going to hear a balloon pop?" he says. More »

Rescuers See 'Survivable Space' in Mine

(Newser) - A camera lowered into a Utah mine where six men are stranded showed a 5 1/2-foot “survivable space” today but little else, the AP reports.  Rescuers pulled out the video camera to protect it from flowing water and install another lens, hoping for a wider angle on the cavity—while another, smaller hole was being used to pump oxygen into the nearly airless mine. Safety Worries Hounded Miners: Source

(Newser) - The area of the Utah mine where six men are stranded was a source of worries about safety before Monday's collapse, but miners didn’t speak up for fear of losing their jobs, a source tells CNN. “I’ve never heard of that,” the mining company president said. “It's probably a rumor, and I'm not going to respond to rumors.” More »

Indiana Mine Shaft Fall Kills 3

(Newser) - Three workers riding in a construction bucket plunged 500 feet to their deaths in an Indiana coal mine shaft today. The “sinking bucket” can hold up to 10 people, but authorities did not say whether anyone else was in the lift. It was also unclear whether the bucket itself fell or the victims were thrown from it, the AP reports. More »

      Rescuers 500 Feet From Miners

(Newser) - Rescue crews have drilled to within 500 feet of where the trapped Utah coal miners are thought to be. The small hole—2 1/2 inches in diameter and now down to a depth of 1,000 feet—would allow a communication line to be dropped. A larger hole—now at 100 feet—would allow food and water to be lowered down. More »

(Newser) - The CEO of a collapsed Utah mine claimed that ongoing “seismic and tectonic activity”  curbed yesterday’s attempts at rescuing 6 miners who remain trapped 1,500 feet underground. He told CNN that the rescue dig won't resume until this afternoon and that the miners won't be reached for at least a week, although their condition will be known in 48 to 72 hours. More »

      Rescuers Need 3 More Days

(Newser) - It will be at least three more days before the six coal miners trapped underground in Utah can be reached—and even then rescuers will have only a 2-inch hole to communicate with the miners, if any survived, and give them food or air. Rescue crews are only 310 feet closer to the miners 30 hours after the cave-in, the AP reports, and more than 1,500 feet remain. More »

(Newser) - It could take days to reach six miners stuck 1,500 feet underground in a collapsed Utah coal mine, rescuers warned yesterday. No contact has been made with the miners, though they're believed to be trapped in a spot with adequate air and water. "Pray, pray, pray," begged the president of the company that owns the mine.
