Rescuers are racing to southeastern Mexico by boat and helicopter to free 300,000 people trapped in their homes by massive flooding, the BBC reports. Nearly 70% of the state of Tabasco is under water and all crops have been obliterated. "We are just like New Orleans," the governor said of his low-lying state. One person has died.

High winds and hotter temperatures are forecast for Southern California today, frustrating firefighters struggling to contain the runaway blazes that have forced more than half a million people from their homes and consumed almost 900 buildings in the last two days. At least a dozen fires are still torching tinder-dry hillsides from Santa Barbara to the Mexican border, reports the Los Angeles Times . The worst damage is around San Diego and Lake Arrowhead.

The fourth in a string of violent earthquakes and more than 60 lower-level tremors rattled Indonesia late today, at a magnitude of 6.2. With its epicenter two miles deep in the Indian Ocean, 65 miles west-northwest of Bengkulu, the government issued, then canceled, another tsunami warning. Nine have died in two days of seismic activity, CNN reports.

Lines of trucks piled with furniture rumbled to relatives and friends for help. A massive undersea earthquake off the Indonesian coast rocked the capital of Jakarta today. Though no casualties have been reported, the quake hit 7.5, shaking the city's tall buildings and leaving its inhabitants in shock. But the earthquake occurred 180 miles under ground, nixing the possibility of a tsunami on the scale of 2004's disaster.

Six people are feared trapped in a coal mine in Huntington Canyon, Utah, after a possible earthquake caused a cave-in today at 2:48am. The miners were working 4 miles from the entrance when the mine collapsed an hour later; rescue teams are now within 2,500 feet of their location, federal mine safety officials tell the Deseret News .
