      Teen Paralyzed by Tick Bite

      (Newser) - A 13-year-old Washington boy was temporarily paralyzed last week by a bite from a tick embedded in his hairline, the Seattle Times reports. Though extremely rare, such paralysis is a risk in Western states, where Rocky Mountain wood ticks and American dog ticks are most prevalent. A tick left untreated can result in death. Experts recommend frequent checks for ticks after time spent in grasslands or forests. More »

      Bush Was Treated for Lyme Disease

      (Newser) - President Bush has increased his vigilance toward pesky invaders—ticks—since undergoing successful treatment for Lyme disease last August, the White House says. The report did not explain how the president contracted the disease, but a spokesman said it was “not uncommon for him to be riding a mountain bike and receive a tick bite,” the Baltimore Sun reports.
