Arizona May Not Roll for McCain

Al Gore's 2000 loss of Tennessee aside, normally a presidential candidate can expect to win his home state relatively easily. But this month John McCain, a full press retinue in tow, made a campaign stop in Arizona, shaking hands and encouraging volunteers to get out the vote. As the New York Times writes, Arizona's demographics are changing, and McCain's own campaign now lists the state he's served for more than 25 years as one of its battlegrounds. More »

Fuel Costs Squeeze Services for Native American Tribes

Higher gas prices are forcing Native American tribal governments to cut back on transportation services, reports Reznet News. The Rosebud Sioux tribe provides its police, education and social services departments with transportation, as well as rides for the elderly and trips to medical appointments. But with coffers running on empty, the South Dakota tribe is changing its driving practices, reallocating funding—and may be forced to shelve programs entirely. More »

      Illegal Immigration Spurs Identity Theft

Identity theft and illegal immigration are not only keeping cops busy, they're often linked, Steven Malanga writes in City Journal . Illegals are known to swipe US workers' data to obtain jobs or commit crimes, and the top five states for identity theft have large immigrant populations. But efforts to stop the ID crime wave are drying up. More »

Mac Boosted Top Backer's Land Swap

John McCain fought successfully for a bill to swap an Arizona rancher’s remote forest holdings for expensive, development-ready federal land in a deal that benefits one of Mac’s biggest campaign fundraisers, the Washington Post reports. The 55,000-acre swap, said to be Arizona's biggest ever, led to a deal for Steve Betts, the McCain donor, to build 12,000 homes on the site. More »

      Texas Raid Rocks Other Polygamists

The raid on the Texas compound of a polygamist sect has similar communities worried, reports the New York Times . Groups of polygamists belonging to the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints live along the Utah-Arizona border and many fear that the crackdown on their Texas brethren means they could be next as the federal government leans on states to get tough on illegal practices. Get Out Of School Already, Colleges Urge

It turns out kids are staying in school … for entirely too long, the Arizona Republic reports. Across the country, colleges are urging students to get in and get out in 4 years. The paper found that just 30% of students graduated state universities in 4 years, a problematic number for legislatures looking to stretch education dollars to the max. More »

      Arizona Drafts Own Worker Bills

Arizona is working on its own guest-worker program, hoping to supply state farmers with labor—and serve as a model for the rest of the country in the process, the Christian Science Monitor reports. But though top lawmakers are behind the measure, getting permission from the federal government—whose own guest-worker program is notoriously clunky—won’t be easy. More »

Shining Sun Belt Beckons to Rust Belt's Weary

Americans are continuing to flock to the Sun Belt, reports the AP. Almost all of the 50 fastest-growing metro areas in 2006 and 2007 were in the South and West, and four of the top 10 were in Texas. None were in the Northeast. Experts say the Sun Belt's strong economies and low house prices are drawing in people, especially from the Rust Belt. More »
