McCain More Popular on the Road Than at Home

(Newser) - GOP frontrunner John McCain is limping in his home state thanks to his stance on immigration. One in 10 Arizonans is an illegal immigrant, and the senator's support for legislation opponents call amnesty dogs him: A recent straw poll in a bellwether county voted him the least acceptable GOP candidate, though he's still expected to carry Arizona, the Los Angeles Times reports. For Dems, West May Be Winnable in November

(Newser) - The political geography of Western states has been shifting from Republican to Democratic, and four—Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, and Arizona—could be winnable for Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton for the first time in decades, Colorado Confidential writes. Party brass wouldn’t talk up a “Western strategy,” but Democratic success in the Mountain time zone could make other swing states less essential. More »

      6 Die From Brain-Eating Amoeba

(Newser) - It's an ominous name—Naegleria fowleri. And it's a more ominous creature, a waterborne amoeba that enters a swimmer's nose, latches onto the olfactory nerve, and travels to the brain, where it feeds until its victim dies. A 14-year-old Arizona boy died this month from Naegleria—one of six US victims this year, AP reports. More »

      Schools Report Declining Enrollment

(Newser) - Student enrollment is down at schools across Arizona, California and Texas—especially at those with high Hispanic populations.  Why? Some cite the sudden dearth of construction jobs as the housing boom has petered out. But anecdotal evidence points to immigration crackdowns, and school districts are feeling the effects: Mesa, AZ, for instance, is looking at $5.6 million less funding this year because of dwindling attendance.
