Surveys differ on whether Americans get enough sleep

(Newser) - Americans slept more in 2005 than in 2000, according to a new study that counters claims of widespread sleep-deprivation. Yanks averaged 59 weekly hours of sleep in 2005, up from 56 hours in 2000, say University of Maryland researchers using Census data that account for every minute of the day. But a National Sleep Foundation survey counted just 48 hours. More »

Chronic Pain Rewires the Brain

Researchers find suffering constant pain can cause permanent changes

(Newser) - Researchers studying the brains of people suffering from chronic pain have found that  an area of their cortex is permanently active when it should sometimes deactivate, Reuters reports. That part of the brain, usually associated with emotion, stays on "full throttle" at all times. Researchers say this could explain why people who endure chronic pain are also more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, sleeplessness, and shortened attention spans.  More »

Ledger Autopsy Inconclusive

Coroner needs 10 days, further tests; actor's roles took toll, caused insomnia

(Newser) - An autopsy on actor Heath Ledger was inconclusive, the AP reports, and a medical examiner's office spokeswoman says that further needed tests will take about 10 days. Meanwhile, Ledger's family echoed earlier police statements that the actor had not committed suicide—rather, his death was “tragic, untimely, and accidental," his father said. More »
