Clinton-Obama Tussle

"Are there three people in this debate, not two?" -John Edwards

The feud between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is getting intense...so intense that it could cost the Democrats a White House victory. Clinton has called Obama a "frustrated" former "slumlord,"  while Obama has criticized Clinton's "different kind of politics" and "looseness with the facts."  Whose side are you on?

Clinton Trying to Undercut Texas Vote: Obama

(Newser) - Barack Obama’s camp yesterday accused Hillary Clinton of unfairly slamming the upcoming Texas primary-caucus vote, McClatchy Newspapers reports. The issue arose over a report that Clinton may sue over caucus voting numbers being reported early. “I think they’re afraid of what the caucus results might be,” said an Obama strategist. More »

Obama Tries to Shore Up Jewish Support

(Newser) - Barack Obama is moving to shore up support among Jewish voters after a series of much-publicized comments and false rumors that have complicated the task for him, the New York Times reports. Obama recently had to distance himself from Louis Farrakhan, clarify comments perceived as pro-Palestinian, and disavow email rumors that he is a Muslim who took office by swearing on the Koran. Obama Relies on Volunteers to Sway Texas

(Newser) - Volunteers, not the paid staff Barack Obama has relied on to win previous primaries, are at the core of his campaign in Texas, reports the Wall Street Journal . It's "like a baling wire and duct tape thing," says his campaign chief in the state. A year ago, it didn't make a lot of sense for the Obama camp to devote many resources here, but the state's emerging importance has forced a relatively late scramble, the Journal notes. More »

Dem Donations a Nightmare for GOP

(Newser) - Republicans may be enjoying the death match between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, but likely not the phenomenal fundraising of the Democrats.  "I look at the Barack Obama campaign in some horror," the GOP national treasurer tells AP, citing Obama's $50-million take in February, along with Clinton's $35 million—together seven times that of John McCain. Obama Riffs on Clinton Scare Ad

(Newser) - Barack Obama threw Hillary Clinton's "red phone" ad right back at her yesterday—with a twist, the Chicago Tribune reports. Clinton's ad showed sleeping children, with a voice intoning that it's 3am, and a phone is ringing the White House. “Who do you want answering the phone?” Barack's rejoinder, with almost identical imagery: “When that call gets answered, shouldn’t the president be the one—the only one—who had the judgment and courage to oppose the Iraq war from the start?”  More »

      What Obama Promises, McCain Delivers

(Newser) - The international press corps is so seduced by Barack Obama and so disgusted by John McCain that neither man can live up to his reputation, London Times US editor Gerard Baker writes. The “grown men wandering the corridors of London, Brussels and Berlin, crooning” about Obama are the same pundits painting McCain as "the grumpy old white man," Baker contends More »

Hot Sites Take Voters for a Ride

(Newser) - Barackobamaisyournewbicycle.com is the latest internet fad: a simple web page that displays a seemingly inexhaustible supply of (likely fictitious) good deeds Barack Obama did for you. He "added you as a friend," "built you a robot," and "made you a mixtape," to start. But what, the Boston Phoenix asks, is the intent behind the site? A pro-Obama-mania celebration? A criticism of the candidate’s ethereal promises? More »

Clinton Counts on Sisterhood in Ohio

(Newser) - Sitting on a 17% lead among women in Ohio, Hillary Clinton is playing the gender card in an effort to save her presidential bid. She holds a slim overall lead in the state, where her focus on jobs has scored with women in all age and economic brackets. "She has struck a chord with women, especially in Ohio," a strategist tells the AP. More »

      Clinton's Black Superdelegates Under Pressure

(Newser) - The heat on Hillary Clinton’s black superdelegates is rising, and Rep. Emanuel Cleaver has called on Barack Obama to speak out against “ugly" pressure from his supporters. The Missouri congressman said Clinton’s African-American backers are being "bludgeoned verbally" and told, “You’re not black if you’re not supporting Barack Obama," the Kansas City Star reports. Clinton Rolls Out 'Nuclear Option' TV Spot

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton today debuted an ad hinting at dire consequences of electing a commander in chief who isn’t “tested," ABC News reports. "It's 3am and your children are asleep," a voice says over images of sleeping infants. "There's a phone in the White House, and it's ringing. Something is happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call." More »

Gay Voters Defect as Clinton Falters

(Newser) - As first lady, Hillary Clinton marched in New York's pride parade and cemented her standing as a defender of gay rights. But her stalwart support in the gay community is waning, Bloomberg reports. Although both Democratic candidates oppose gay marriage and support civil unions, only Barack Obama wants to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act—which Bill Clinton signed into law in 1996. More »
