Clinton-Obama Tussle

"Are there three people in this debate, not two?" -John Edwards

The feud between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is getting intense...so intense that it could cost the Democrats a White House victory. Clinton has called Obama a "frustrated" former "slumlord,"  while Obama has criticized Clinton's "different kind of politics" and "looseness with the facts."  Whose side are you on?

Obama Camp Spills Some Details on Foreign Trip

(Newser) - Barack Obama’s team released a few details about their candidate's trip abroad today, but the time frame remains tightly under wraps. Israel in particular presents a maze of meetings for the Democrat, who’ll see not only president Shimon Peres, but scandal-plagued prime minister Ehud Olmert and three potential replacements. Obama will also meet with the Palestinian president and prime minister, USA Today reports. More »

VP Picks Lieberman, Hagel: Disasters for Party Bases

(Newser) - With talk that John McCain and Barack Obama could pick Joe Lieberman and Chuck Hagel, respectively, to round out their tickets, liberal and conservative stalwarts tell Politico the aisle-crossing VPs would likely wreak havoc with the parties’ bases. While each has broken with his party on Iraq, Lieberman is far too socially liberal for Republicans, Hagel too far right for Democrats. More »

      Obama Backers More Enthusiastic: Poll

(Newser) - A new AP/Yahoo poll shows a bounty of enthusiasm for Barack Obama and a deficit for John McCain, the Boston Globe reports. Some key stats: 38% of the Democrat’s supporters are excited by the election, while only 9% of the Republican's are. Among Obama supporters, 16% say they could still change their pick, while 24% of McCain-backers say so. More »

      Obama's Republican Pal Gets Grief

(Newser) - Kirk Dillard is a lot like many Obama supporters. He came to respect and admire Obama, and he appeared in an early primary ad saying so. But the Illinois legislator also happens to be a Republican—and a delegate for John McCain. Now that Obama is the nominee, Dillard’s GOP colleagues have gotten hostile, Politico reports. More »

Iraqi Visits: Much Ado but Few Epiphanies

(Newser) - Lawmakers have been flocking to Iraq to assess the situation on the ground, as Barack Obama is about to do, but the visits rarely result in any revelations for them, writes Karen DeYoung in the Washington Post . The itineraries are fairly routine by now—meet the generals, the troops, and some Iraqi leaders; maybe visit the front lines—and "most seem to return even more convinced of the views they held before they left." • Obama: The Arrogance of Hope

      Obama: The Arrogance of Hope

(Newser) - When Barack Obama appeared on the scene, the nation asked, “Who is he?” Now the Washington Post 's Charles Krauthammer wants to know, “Who does he think he is?” Obama—who wants to speak at the hallowed ground of Germany's Brandenburg Gate—seems to have an awfully high opinion of himself for someone who’s accomplished…what, exactly? He has not one significant legislative achievement, and his most memorable private sector work was a book on his favorite topic: himself. More »

Obama Relying on Own Mini State Dept.

(Newser) - As Barack Obama makes his first overseas visit as the presumptive Democratic nominee, the New York Times spotlights the 300-strong army of foreign policy advisers that keep the candidate abreast of world affairs. Obama's operation is run like a mini-State Department, the Times notes, with senior aides taking responsibility for regions and overseeing 20 different teams. More »

Judaism's Black Converts Growing Part of US Mosaic

(Newser) - The number of African-Americans converting to Judaism is growing, the Christian Science Monitor reports, at a time when Democrat Barack Obama is seeking to renew what was once a strong alliance between the groups. Politics, though, plays a small role; "Obama's candidacy, African-Americans choosing to be Jews ... is all part of the great American story of freedom and choice," one observer says. More »

      Hard-Core Supply-Sider: I'm Voting for the Democrat

(Newser) - Being a Reagan, Gingrich and Dole soldier won’t stop former Chamber of Commerce honcho Larry Hunter from voting for Barack Obama this fall, he writes in the New York Daily News . It doesn’t matter that he wholly disagrees with the Dem on every point of domestic policy; the chance to close the book on “unjustified war and unconstitutional abridgment of individual rights” is worth the price of “unreconstructed, dyed-in-the-wool, big-government” liberalism. Clinton Boosts Efforts to Fight Malaria, GOP

(Newser) - Bill Clinton's philanthropic foundation has struck a deal to keep a lid on the price of anti-malaria drugs, the AP reports. The former president today outlined a plan that would help limit wild fluctuation in the market for artemisinin, an extract key to treating malaria, which sickens 500 million a year. Six suppliers, and the UN, are on board, and Clinton hopes for more. More »

Idealism Met Different End for Obama Sr.

(Newser) - Like his candidate son, Barack Obama Sr. was charismatic, eloquent and idealistic, those who knew him say—so idealistic he was devastated by the corruption he saw in his native Kenya. The Harvard grad was so disillusioned upon his return to Africa, the Los Angeles Times reports, he turned to drink, with several DUI accidents preceding the car crash that killed him, at 46, in 1982.
