Clinton-Obama Tussle

"Are there three people in this debate, not two?" -John Edwards

The feud between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is getting intense...so intense that it could cost the Democrats a White House victory. Clinton has called Obama a "frustrated" former "slumlord,"  while Obama has criticized Clinton's "different kind of politics" and "looseness with the facts."  Whose side are you on?

Pa. Primary Turns Politics of Race On Its Ear

(Newser) - The upcoming primary in Pennsylvania pits two of the state's prominent young Democrats against each other in a battle that seems to defy the normal conventions of race and politics, USA Today reports. Philadelphia's popular black mayor is pushing hard for Clinton in the city, where Obama is nearly a lock to win, while a white first-term congressman is bucking the state establishment and campaigning for Obama in the suburbs. Obama Erases Clinton's Lead With Speech

(Newser) - A new Gallup poll puts the two Democratic presidential candidates on even footing nationally, with Barack Obama holding a statistically negligible 1-point lead over Hillary Clinton. The poll, conducted after Obama's widely praised speech on race, suggests that the Illinois senator has erased the damage done by the Jeremiah Wright controversy, writes the Baltimore Sun . More »

Clinton 'Misspoke' About Dodging Bosnia Sniper

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton had to dodge sniper fire when she landed at the start of a goodwill tour of Bosnia in 1996—at least that’s what the senator said last week. But after an archive CBS news video showed the then-first lady smiling and waving without a single bullet whizzing by, her campaign conceded that she “misspoke.” One aide admitted the situation “was not quite as dramatic" as Clinton put it. They're Just Not That Into You

(Newser) - The Clinton-Obama slugfest resembles the “drawn-out and painful break-up of a relationship,' Michael Tomasky writes in the Guardian —and the sparring couple might be on its last rounds. "Mark down May 7," he suggests. "That's the date by which Clinton should be one of two things: a, the possible nominee after all; or, b, out of the race." More »

In Democrats' Primary Mess, Democracy Is Real Loser

(Newser) - Info on the Democratic candidates is pouring out, too late for most voters to get much out of it, Walter Shapiro complains in Salon. "Most Democratic voters will have chosen between Clinton and Obama back in February," he gripes, and the voting that produced Obama's delegate lead is dated—its “potency as an expression of the pure popular will” is aging rapidly. Clinton, Obama Both Inflate Senate Records

(Newser) - Barack Obama didn’t take part in meetings on immigration legislation in 2006, recalls Arlen Specter, one of the handful of senators who did, but Specter just shrugs when the Illinois Democrat says he did. “It’s not an unusual matter for senators to take a little extra credit,” Specter says—and both Obama and Hillary Clinton have taken liberal helpings so far, the Washington Post reports. Obama Recalls Sparring With Preacher

(Newser) - “This is not a crackpot church,” Barack Obama told a conservative Philadelphia radio host in an interview defending Trinity Church, Politico reports. The Democratic hopeful says that despite Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s “very offensive views,” he built “one of the finest churches in Chicago. Witness the fact that Bill Clinton invited him to the White House when he was having his personal crises.” More »

Consider Pulling Plug, NM Gov. Tells Hillary

(Newser) - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson advised Hillary Clinton today to consider quitting if she trails Barack Obama at convention time, Bloomberg reports. But Richardson, who has endorsed Obama, insists his heart is still with Hillary, CNN reports. “I’m very loyal to the Clintons,” said Bill Clinton’s former energy secretary. “But it shouldn’t just be Bush-Clinton, Bush-Clinton. What about the rest of us?" More »

Pa. Voters Like Tried-and-True Clinton Name

(Newser) - Keystone state voters prefer old-school to bling, Politico reports—which is why they favor Hillary Clinton by 12 points in the state's April 22 primary. “If you are going to introduce a brand new product, you don’t come to Pennsylvania,” one analyst said. “We are much more about heritage than cutting edge here.” Hillary has the heritage: Her father grew up there, and her last name has already hit the ballot twice thanks to husband Bill. Hillary Camp in the Red Last Month

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton’s campaign is in debt despite a massive influx of donations last month, according to FEC filings. She raised $35 million in February, spent $31 million and ended up with $33 million—but most of it is reserved for the general election and the rest is owed. However, $5 million of that debt is to herself and need not be repaid. More »

Clinton Finally Figures Out the Internet

(Newser) - Hillary Clinton is suddenly raking in donations over the Internet, the New York Times reports. Clinton took in $30 million online in February, and looks on pace for similar figures in March. That may pale before the $45 million the webizens bestowed upon Barack Obama, but it’s a landmark for Clinton, whose online pull had previously topped out at $8 million. More »
