Edwards 2008

"I want to be a champion for the people I have fought for all my life - regular people."

The Breck girl of American politics fell short as a #2 in 2004. This election, his southern charm and old-style populist politics again failed to carry him all the way to the country's top spot. But will he repeat his VP run with Barack or Hillary?

Edwards 'Love Child' Story Shows Press Double Standard

The press jumped all over Larry Craig’s bathroom dalliance not because he was gay, it was claimed, but because he was a hypocrite with an anti-gay voting record. But no one is piling on John Edwards, whom the National Enquirer says it caught visiting his mistress and love child this week. Jack Shafer of Slate thinks the non-coverage reveals a double standard: Homo-hypocrisy is wrong, but hetero-hypocrisy is OK. More »

Tabloid: We Caught Edwards Visiting Mistress, Love Child

The National Enquirer claims to have cornered and confronted John Edwards yesterday after a late-night tryst with the woman they have been saying for months is his mistress and the mother of his infant child. The tabloid says its reporters tracked Edwards as he entered a Los Angeles hotel through a side door and used a basement elevator; left the hotel and returned again with her; and left again at 2:40am. When confronted by Enquirer reporters, they say, he fled—and then hid in a bathroom and summoned security. More »

      VP Rerun 'Won't Happen': Edwards

Days after endorsing Barack Obama, John Edwards is beating back buzz he’s on the vice-presidential shortlist. “No, no, won’t happen,” he told NBC today. “It’s just not something I’m interested in.” The '04 nominee wouldn’t cop to an interest in being attorney general either, the Boston Globe reports, and is thinking about jobs under Obama “only in an abstract way." Edwards Endorses Obama

John Edwards endorsed Barack Obama today, calling him the one person who can bring about the "one America" that will bridge the divide between rich and poor and rebuild the nation's "moral authority." Edwards, who dropped out of the race in January, joined Obama in Michigan for the announcement, the Wall Street Journal reports. His backing could help Obama with his weak spot—working-class white voters. More »

A Closer Look at the Math Problem Edwards Averted

The long-tern effect of John Edwards’ early exit is that Barack Obama will wrap up the nomination by early June, a grateful Steve Kornacki writes in the New York Observer . A  slower withdrawal would have spelled trouble for the Democrats, who are having enough trouble making up their minds. "Imagine the comparative mess Democrats might be in if Edwards had opted to stick around," says Kornacki, who dissects the numbers. More »

Edwards: Obama Set to Win, But I'm Still Not Endorsing

The former third wheel also refused to say who he voted for in this week’s North Carolina primary, adding that the power of endorsements was “greatly inflated," Reuters reports. More »

Why Is Edwards AWOL in North Carolina?

Why has John Edwards maintained silence as the precarious Democratic contest heads to his home state of North Carolina? Could be, Politico posits, because he knows he has little sway there. According to insiders, the state, which holds its primary Tuesday, knew the senator only fleetingly before he leapt to the national stage, and though Democrats are proud of this native son's "political comet," an endorsement “would carry no weight.” More »

Edwards Fans Move Decidedly Toward Obama

Donors to John Edwards, as well as his congressional backers, have noticeably chosen Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton—a fact which, combined with the expected landslide in North Carolina’s primary, could lead Edwards to tap the Illinois senator, the Hill ’s Alexander Bolton argues. Nine US representatives have switched to Obama, to none for Clinton; Obama's attracted three times as many ex-Edwards donors. More »

      Edwards Endorsement Seems Unlikely

Neither Barack Obama nor Hillary Clinton should hold their breath for an endorsement from John Edwards, Politico reports. People close to the influential former candidate expect him to parlay neutrality in the primary fight into a "party elder" role like that of Al Gore.  In a Leno appearance Thursday, Edwards spoke highly of both candidates. Campaigns Hit the Road; the Road Hits Back

Forty-two states have voted, and the Democratic Party isn't much closer to having a presidential nominee than it was on New Year's Day. Election fatigue is walloping campaign workers who planned to pack up on Super Tuesday and are still working 6 weeks later. “People are being held hostage by the tempo of this campaign,” a Hillary Clinton adviser tells the New York Times . Clinton Wins Fla.; No Delegates

Hillary Clinton won the Democratic primary in Florida tonight, but she'll have no delegates to show for it, the AP reports. None of the Democrats campaigned here because the national party stripped the state of convention delegates—a punishment for moving up its primary without permission. Still, 1.5 million Democrats voted, with Clinton getting 50%, Obama 33%, and Edwards 14%. More »
