Channeling Chelsea

She's a former first daughter and potential future first daughter. The only child of the Democratic uber couple, Bill and Hillary Clinton, Chelsea Clinton has (mostly) avoided the lime light - until recently when she became active in her mom's campaign. What do we know about her and when did we know it? And why did John McCain make her the butt of a tasteless joke 10 years ago?

Chelsea Swings Through Philly's Gay Clubs

(Newser) - Chelsea Clinton met with wild and drunken support on her “gay pub crawl” through Philadelphia last night, the Patriot-News reports. “Chelsea, the gays love you!” cried one supporter. “We love your highlights,” shouted another. “Thank you, but that’s not why you should vote for my mom,” said Chelsea. “I grabbed her ass!” one woman shouted. Chelsea Faces Campaign's Rough Side

(Newser) - Until recently, the campaign trail has been a generally hospitable place for Chelsea Clinton. She never talks to reporters, and her rallies generally attract fawning Clinton supporters lobbing softball questions. But as the race heats up, the questions are becoming more pointed, as is the scrutiny, the Los Angeles Times reports. Some of the stories Clinton tells on the campaign trail strain credulity. More »

      Chelsea Draws the Monica Query

(Newser) - “Presumably, the question had to come at some point,” write the LA Times ’ Andrew Malcolm and Mark Silva, but Chelsea Clinton dealt with an audience query on Monica Lewinsky “quite neatly” yesterday. The question came at the end of an Indiana college appearance when a man asked if Bill’s notorious affair had hurt Hillary’s credibility. More »

Chelsea Shows Best of Both Clintons

(Newser) - Chelsea Clinton has come into her own on the campaign trail, “self-assured, soothing … at once affable and urbane,” even “the ideal amalgam of her parents’ political talents,” glows Lloyd Grove in a New York profile. Bill and Hillary have adroitly managed their daughter's public persona, obsessively keeping the press away from her—even making comedians sorry for Chelsea jokes—but she is now orchestrating her own political coming-out, Grove says. New Kid Works Old Clinton Mojo

(Newser) - Chelsea Clinton is the hottest ticket on her mom's campaign, but it's taken her a while to come into her own. Just last December, the media-shy Stanford grad waved meekly beside Hillary at an Iowa rally. And while she's still not giving interviews, the former first daughter isn't shy about stumping solo across the country to bolster mom's support among women and young voters. More »

(Newser) - MNSBC suspended anchor David Shuster today after he drew fire from Hillary Clinton's camp for saying former first daughter Chelsea was being “pimped out in some weird sort of way” by her mother’s campaign. Shuster apologized on air earlier tonight, though he at first stood by the comments, made yesterday, even after a spokesman called his remark offensive, the Washington Post reports. More »

Chelsea Hits Road on Mom's Behalf

      Chelsea's Lips Are Sealed

(Newser) - Chelsea Clinton has strictly maintained press silence while campaigning with her mom in Iowa, turning down even a “kid reporter” for the Scholastic News, the AP reports. "I'm sorry,” Chelsea told the 9-year-old yesterday, “I don't talk to the press and that applies to you, unfortunately. Even though I think you're cute." More »

Better 1st Kid: Chelsea or Jenna?

(Newser) - Conventional wisdom that puts Chelsea Clinton at the front of the class and Jenna Bush at the back is undergoing a makeover, as the current first daughter charms in public life while her predecessor hits the upper-crust party scene. The “closer I look, the more I like Jenna,” writes the New Republic ’s T.A. Frank, and “the less I like Chelsea.” More »

    • A joke too bad to print?

During the last few months, many established media outlets have decided to report innuendo and rumor about the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, as long as they have a source they can cite (at least anonymously), or another media player has reported the same. But this new standard in the practice of journalism seemingly does not extend to other political figures, at least not media darlings like Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz. Earlier this month, at a Republican Senate fund-raiser, McCain told a downright nasty joke making fun of Janet Reno, Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton.
